desertcart.com: The Linux Command Line Beginner's Guide eBook : Moeller, Jonathan: Kindle Store Review: Very helpful read - This book gave me serveal aha moments. I've books on Linux before reading this one and I felt confused. Not with this book. Very straight forward and easy to read and understand. I'm new at Linux but feel confident after reading and taking taking notes with the book. Review: Very Handy Guide - A very handy guide, and from my iPad easy to keep near the Linux screen. Yes, I have seen a few typos, but I find some in printed literary works from time to time as well. The only part lacking thus far (I am a little over 1/2 way into the book) was no instruction on adding a user to the sudoers file. I am working CentOS at the moment, but think it's pretty much the same in Ubuntu. My test user could not access root privileges via the sudo command because it was not in the sudoers file. It took a little web searching to learn how to edit that file and add the user, then it worked. But I haven't found those tips in this book. I might also recommend for newbies doing the same to create a group ("admin" is a good name choice), give the group root privileges, and then add any users to that group as needed. That solves the problem, and does not require manually adding each user to sudoers individually. All in all, though, this book is just what I needed to begin to learn the Linux command line, and recommend it to anyone seeking same,

Great Starter For Beginners Of Linux
This is a great, inexpensive beginners guide for new users to Linux. There were a lot of typos, but the book is a well written guide and I didn't notice any typo's in the commands. The book covers the basic commands, and getting around the Linux shell. The section on using Vim was great and well explained. If you are an absolute beginner to Linux I think the book is a steal for the price. If you are a seasoned user or someone with more than a basic understanding of getting around Linux , you may want to move on to some more advanced reading. Taken from the book : In the Guide, you'll learn how to: Copy, move, and delete files and directories. Create, delete, and manage users. Create, delete, and manage groups. Use virtual terminals. Use the bash shell. Safely use the root account with su and sudo. Change permissions and ownership of files and directories. Create and edit text files from the command line, without using a graphical editor. Diagnose network connectivity problems. And many other topics. I gave this book 5 stars because it covered exactly what it stated, and was a steal for the price.

Best beginner Linux book. I have many.
I have many books on Linux and ubuntu. I am a beginner but as far as really understanding what you need to know to properly use Linux, this is the best. It is just very clear and user friendly. It gave me details that are very important and somehow missed. Like the space after CD and case sensitivity. They all mention it but this book shows you the command and explains it. This is my go to book. I am glad it was only 99 cents. When I went to the review, I expected it to be one of my more expensive books. This is the only book you will need to thoroughly navigate through the command line and your system. It is for beginners but the beginning is a long road. I study java and play with other languages but I didn't think to really get through my own computer, which I have been using a fairly user friendly gui. With so many forums out there, I could still do what I needed as long as I could grasp the details. This book makes it all easier.

Easy to read and understand
Lots of commands that I might need to work with basic and more advanced commands. Can highlight commands to find them later for reference.

Aptly Titled
Good, non-intimidating book for beginners to the Linux command line. Starting from scratch, the reader will understand the basic commands and concepts for managing a Linux system. The reader will also learn how to get help and command line reference info from their system. A better tutorial, in my opinion, than the thick manuals. Next step for readers is to use their skills on their computer. That is the best way to learn. Outstanding value on Kindle at the current price of $0.99.

Easy Reading
I was very weak in Linux and this book gives you the basics. If you are an advanced user, don't bother purchasing this. It will only make you frustrated. There were other comments that stated the book made them feel like they were idiots. If they felt that way, it's probably because they were too advanced for what it offers. I like it because you get just what is described: A beginner's guide. Now that I am reading it, I plan to move on to a more advanced book, but you need the basics first before you can do that.

This is the most helpful instruction booklet I have read, regarding learning the Linux command line. I have read several others and I realize it is not an easy topic . To write about something as complex as the Linux command line and yet make it simple enough for an absolute novice is something not many authors can achieve. Jonathan Moeller does it amazingly well. This is first of his books I purchased and after reading it , I purchased 2 more. If you are looking for a Ubuntu specific book, I would recommend the Ubuntu Beginners Guide, seventh edition as much of the info in this book is repeated there as well. I am very pleased with this book.

Simple and straight forward! Gets you started and leaves you wanting more! Recommended for beginners. I have worked with Unix before but not recently, great reminder.

Buen libro para los que, como yo, no tienen conocimientos sobre Linux. Aunque depende del nivel de cada uno creo que, en general, su lectura es recomendable.

This book has excellent information inside. It goes through some system basics: users, groups, and permissions. It also brings some information related to devices, removable media, directory, and subdirectories. Commands like copy(cp), move, and remove files are here too as so commands to go to a directory to another. Explanation about IP and very basic network configuration has been brought too. Useful to everyone who wants to begin to understand Linux and it's distributions. Highly recommended.
