WOMAN IN GOLD is the remarkable true story of one woman's journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann, starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt's famous painting THE LADY IN GOLD. Together with her inexperienced but pluck Review: Such a great movie - I love Helen Mirren, and I loved this movie! It's not only got an outstanding performance by Helen Mirren, but it also has a particularly outstanding performance by the young actress who plays Mirren's character at a younger age. I've seen loads of films set in this time period, but for some reason THIS one really conveyed the urgency of the times, the anxiety of trying to get to a safer location when everyone around is going nuts. Why is this so good? It just is. It still resonates with me, partly because of the way it showed the before-and-after of the Nazi buildup in the country, but also because it showcased such a beautiful work of art and used it to spotlight the horrible turbulence of the times. That painting is fantastic, and just seeing it as it must've looked in a family's house before the war was a revelation. And seeing the injustice of having a country refuse to return it to the family from which it had been stolen - infuriating! But to see that injustice confronted and to see that good CAN prevail, that made this intense movie feel worthwhile in the end. I've watched it several times and recommend it to anyone wanting an engrossing movie that doesn't make you feel horrible afterwards. It's uplifting! It's not the kind of movie you can just kinda watch in the background and do homework - you are going to be pulled in! And honestly, these performances are worth watching, just for themselves. Excellent! Review: Superb! - This is an excellent movie, and a must-see for everyone. Helen Miren is my new favorite actor. She is superb this role. The fact that this is based on true events, makes it all the more enjoyable. I will definitely watch it again.

Golden Achievement
I'm happy to see the high praise for this film here that wasn't accompanying it's original theatrical release. Having seen it in the theater I couldn't wait until the Blu-Ray/DVD was released. I found the film extremely well done, dramatically paced and very uplifting. Yes, I already knew the story and it's outcome, but that wasn't a detraction from enjoying this cinematic treatment of this real-life drama. While I found Helen Mirren slightly too young (and too pretty) for the role of Maria, she conveyed throughly the angst, determination and resilience of this character who fought against all odds and emerged the victor. Much has been said about Ryan Reynolds portrayal, nearly all I had read were critical reviews … I must totally disagree. I think he nailed this character; green, simple and honest … his character and portrayal grew throughout the film and keep one cheering for him to carry on and triumph over Goliath - in this case the Austrian Government. Particular praise MUST be given to the younger Maria played to perfection by Tatiana Maslany (currently staring the in the BBC series "Orphan Black"). Her presence on the screen is riveting, a particularly fine actress - I feel she should have been nominated for an Oscar in this role … The many flashback scenes in which she plays the younger Maria are highlights of the film for me - Stunning work here! Not to be missed. I can't express how moving this film is on many levels; the beauty of Vienna (happens to be my favorite city), the greatness and genius of Art, the resilience and determination of the oppressed and the delight in seeing justice served. Highly recommended.

One of my favorites!
Woman in Gold is such a powerful and beautiful movie — I absolutely love it! It’s one of my all-time favorites. The story is incredibly moving and meaningful, and it does a wonderful job telling the true story behind the fight to reclaim a priceless piece of art taken during the Holocaust. Helen Mirren gives an amazing performance, and the film balances emotion, history, and justice in such a compelling way. It’s both heartbreaking and inspiring, and it really stays with you after watching. Definitely a movie I can watch again and again.

Fantastic Movie
The best thing about this movie is that it is a true story. So terrible what happened to the family and the Austrian Government made an amazing choice, watch to find out what happens!

Fallout from the Life of Jewish woman's narrow escape from Nazi Germany.
Brought to the surface the psychological fallout from a Jewish woman's escape from Nazi Germany just in time, but who left all her family behind to die. Story centers around a very valuable portrait of her beloved aunt which was stolen by the Nazi's and which turns up in a Gallery in Vienna, which is where she once lived. This story had some deep emotional layers, both for the Jewish woman (Helen Mirren) and her friend's lawyer son who takes on the monumental task of getting the portrait back for her. This resulted in a landmark international case and went some way in helping her come to terms with her past. For the young lawyer, it reconnected him with his ethnic historical past, one he really never had connected with before. Excellent movie.

Not enjoyable
Only gave four stars because of the closed captioning. The words did not match the scene it was either before or after what was being shown. Good movie but ruined for me as I need correct closed captioning. I feel I should be reimbursed.

This is one of the best movies on the illegal infiltration by the Nazi's into Austria. After beautiful 'The Sound of Music' which had some reference of the Nazis in Austria, this is another, where the elderly lady decides to fight for her rights with great confidence, in her young smart lawyer. The Nazis destroyed and looted, but the courageous Jews fought back. Helen Mirren, who had some years back acted with our own Om Puri, is elegant, sophisticated and is superb as the elderly lady. Ryan Reynolds is aptly cast as the young lawyer and Daniel Bruhl is the helping hand. Both the men play their roles in style. A great watch. Not to be missed.

This is an extraordinary movie starring Dame Helen Mirren, about a woman who had to flee Vienna in the war, and who lost a lot of her belonging to being seized by the Nazi’s. She returns to her homeland, and in her later life, tries to reclaim those belongings, one of them being a Portrait of her aunt, by the artist Klimt, The Lady in Gold. It is a well acted, well directed movie, and the story is true and one not to miss. Definitely worth a watch. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and hope you do too.
