AO Coolers Caravan Canvas Soft Cooler with High-Density Insulation and Oversized Storage Pockets

Very impressive! Kept our drinks and lunch items cold for longer than we expected. We froze water bottles and surprisingly it took them 2+ days to thaw while keeping beverage cans and bottles of water cold. We only put cold items in the cooler. We were sure to keep the bag in the shade and zipped it up quickly. Nice sturdy quality with a smooth zipper. Easy to clean and durable. The two side pockets are extra nice and large enough to hold various items, like bags of cookies, chips, silverware etc. Would buy again! Even my husband was impressed!

I did my homework on this purchase. I joined Freedom Boat Club a few months ago so I go out on a powerboat about once a week. I need a convenient way to bring cold drinks and food without lugging a huge cooler from my car to the dock everytime. So, I wanted to find a suitable soft cooler that was a good compromise between size and weight -- and of course it needed to keep drinks cold and not leak all over my car. I really did want a Yeti soft cooler but I really didn't want to pay $300. So I googled and read every review and article I could find on soft coolers. As far as I can figure, there are basically four segments in the market: 1) Yeti -- perhaps the best and undoubtedly the most expensive; 2) Yeti knock-offs -- a host of coolers that claim they are as good as Yeti and cost almost as much; 3) Mid-priced soft coolers -- like this one; and 4) Disposable, tradeshow-grade crap. So I've had a bunch of type 4 coolers and I'm done with them. They don't keep stuff cool and they leak water everywhere. I decided that type 1 (Yeti) is not going to happen -- just too much to spend for a soft cooler no matter how good it is. So I was really torn between Type 2 and 3 and trying to make the best decision. At the end of the day, it came down to a few good reviews for this AO Cooler, one in Consumer Reports, and the realization that the most logical decision is to take a chance with this cooler for $60 rather than a Yeti knockoff for 3-4 times more. If this AO Cooler works out, I've saved a bunch of money. If it doesn't, then I get the Yeti knockoff or even the Yeti itself knowing that it's worth the substantially higher price. So far, so good. I've taken it on a couple trips and it performs well. My drinks stayed cold and there was no leaking. It's not as heavy-duty as the Yeti or knock-offs but I think if I'm careful it should hold up. I'll update this review in a few months and report positively or negatively on durability. At this point, I would recommend this soft cooler.

UPDATE 10-2024: I've had two of these bags now and they have held up reasonably well, but if used daily like me, the main zipper will die (a beefier zipper would be a welcome improvement). The good news is, you can return the bag to AO Cooler (you pay shipping to them, they pay shipping back to you) and they will install a new zipper (and interior lining if needed) for $15. .. These bags also work well to bring home frozen items from the store. I work for the railroad and I've been using the 24-pack AO Cooler as an overnight lunch bag for several months now. Keeps everything cold for my two-day trips (using freezer packs and pre-frozen foods). It's holding up well. I carry 1gal of water plus glass containers of frozen food = heavy. No problems with the zippers or the handle so far (though I wish the carry handle had some padding). The full-width side pockets are indespensible - love the side pockets! Going to get a bigger one for road trips. Highly recommend. PS: I was concerned the 24-pack size might be too big for use as a lunch bag, but it's not. I'm glad I didn't get the smaller size.

This is THE perfect road trip cooler. Compresses down unlike other "famous" brand soft coolers, plenty of room for a 12 pack of cans or bottles with a whole bunch of ice. One piece liner means no leaks if you take care of it. Ice was melted, but kept everything freezing cold for 12 hours in the car - even with occasionally putting in a warm beverage to cool down. Side pouches are great for snacks. Great quality, just the right size, and very handy. Expensive, but not extortionate - but it's worth it.

Nice enough cooler. Took it camping in Death Valley (80° days and 55° nights). It kept 10 pounds of ice intact for 2-1/2 days. Given a bit of care you can expect about 2 full days of ice in a warm climate. I made sure to keep it in the shade and under the sleeping bag for extra insulation when it wasn’t in use. Also used a layer of Mylar bubble wrap material, the type used for car window shades, to fill empty space and trap cool air near the food. I like the side pockets, which, if stuffed with insulating material like towels, would likely help keep the contents cold longer. The pockets are big. To give you an idea of the size, they can easily accommodate large paper plates, and in terms of volume a pocket can hold a few bananas, a half dozen tangerines, and an avocado. A couple cons, some of which have already been mentioned: no leaks as long as it’s upright, it will leak through the zipper if on its side; the zipper pulls are lightweight and I expect they will break, but not the end of the world, that’s easy enough to fix; the stitching holding the straps seems likely a weak point, but I wouldn’t expect stitching separation would compromise the function of the straps. Bottom line is it’s a good design and better then most thinly insulated soft coolers, it should last quite a few years with moderate use, but it’s not a Yeti, which would likely not hold ice much longer but might last a decade because of higher quality materials.

After much research I went with AO 24 Deluxe. I am not disappointed at all. I love the side pockets and the overall quality is great. I use it as a lunch kit and can’t speak to the insulation yet as it’s winter in Canada... Only complaint would be the shoulder strap is too short to put over your head and wear across your body. Can’t go wrong for the price.
