Make: 3D Printing: The Essential Guide to 3D Printers

Worth every penny of the price! I think there is no better way of getting a great education in 3D printing and how to get started. I read a review where someone complained that the book was too basic and not quite up to date. The field of 3D printing is changing so quickly that it would be impossible to write or compile a book that is up to the minute. The book obviously addresses people who want to start 3D printing and those with a small bit of experience. I don't know why an advanced user would complain about it. D Rogers

Reading through this book, I was amazed at the amount of content that was in here, and most of the tutorials were great for someone new to 3D printing, but i'm willing to bet even some of the most experienced 3D printer people out there haven't tried all of the different things compiled in here. Printer Reviews If you are buying this book for printer reviews, you're much better off with the "Make: Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing 2014". It has more printers, and is more up-to-date, even though it was available (for me, anyways) before this book. As an example, this book reviews the Felix 1.0 printer from Felix Printers, where the new guide reviews the 2.0. (and the 3.0 is already shipping, so not sure why they take so long to test) This was the same with the cube printers, and the MakerBot Replicator 2 vs the 2x. Software Tutorials If you want to learn 3D modeling, this guide offers a lot of options and even walks you through making a pencil topper in TinkerCAD. There was a bunch of information about slicer as well, which was informative about 3D printing, but the found it odd that a guide for complete beginners didn't even mention that this was not needed for someone using a MakerBot Replicator 2. 3D Scanning Really enjoyed the scanning tutorial, but it was literally copied and pasted from the "Getting Started with Makerbot" book a year ago. The cleanup guide was actually stated in the first page that it was outdated and a new video was posted, but instead of updating the tutorial, it was the same one as in the old book. Also, it mentioned that Mac users have to use some type of Windows with ReconstructMe, and mentions nothing of the Skanect software, (released in January 2013) which is a decent Mac alternative. Again, something mentioned in the magazine that didn't make it in this book. Finishing Techniques and Post-Processing This was my favorite part of the book. It mentions things like how to do friction welding to put pieces together with just a rotary tool. There are also tips on painting and many other things here that are worth checking out. All-in-all is was worth the $10 for me being at the beginner stages of 3D printing, but I felt like if you were going to charge to put together a bunch of free or already made tutorials, you should take the time to update them and keep them current.

Good introduction to 3D printing, you could find most of this information on the web and I knew that before I purchased. However I wanted everything in one easy place to research. If you're new to 3d printing this is a good place to start.

Exciting introduction to the world of 3d printing. Tons of great references and information. Must buy for anyone looking to get into 3d printing and unleash their creativity.

Excellent source for information on 3D printing. Gives good sense of where to go for enhancement of information. The 3D printer reviews help with determine which machine is best for you.

Good starter book. Covers quite a good range of 3D printing aspects, very informative.

Ce livre a au moins gagné le prix pour « mon premier livre Kindle renvoyer ». Je n’ai lu que 10 pages, parmi les premières j’ai trouvé un nombre certains de « termes » techniques, sans explications, ces mots donc rendaient des phrases incompréhensibles (il faut dire que je suis anglophone), de plus il y avait (v Kindle) les illustrations des machines de marque ‘xxx’ ayant pour titre ‘machine de marque ‘yyyy’. Peut-être cruel ayant lu si peu , mais …..

It gives you the lay of the land, focus is primarily on using the printer, rather than the nuts and bolts and internal details on the 3d printer. There are some details on the hardware, that are useful. Not the book if you want to make your own printer or to hack an wxisting one. Does cover a lot of detail on sculpturing and finishing which is nice.

This is a an excellent book to read if you wish to start or thinking of starting 3D printing all of the Make books and paperback
