When independent elderly woman Daisy Werthan (Jessica Tandy) crashes her car, an African American driver Hoke Colburn (Morgan Freeman) is hired as her chauffeur. Even though the relationship has a rough start with Daisy’s reluctance and hints of racism, the two form a close bond of friendship that transcends racial prejudices and social conventions. A brilliant classic!
Based on the Pulitzer winning play by Alfred Uhry ("Parade"), "Driving Miss Daisy" is a film that explores relationships, aging, how the "golden years" are not at all golden, and a historical era of America is frozen in time. A black man (Morgan Freeman) is hired to become the driver for the elderly and strong willed Jewish woman too old now to drive herself. (Jessica Tandy.) The brilliant script takes us from the first awkward encounter to the established warm friendship between them many years later. It goes without saying that acting performances are stellar; this is Tandy and Freeman. Tandy's son is played by the brilliant and under appreciated Dan Akroyd, a remarkable character actor. There is truth and beauty and ugliness and familiarity all through this film. This is not a "chick flick" (oh, how offensive that term is) it is a classic film in the category with "Casablanca", "Marvin's Room" and "50/50". It's not an epic, it is subtle, powerful, intense and moving. Tandy made one more film after this one ("Nobody's Fool") and got an Oscar for neither. Shocking. To compare the two characters is like Streep in "Silkwood" and "Sophie's Choice." For all we know it's two different women. But the star of this film is the script, which was wisely left close to the stage version. Uhry is a man who grew up in the South born in 1936. His grandfather owned the Atlanta pencil factory where Mary Phagan was murdered and Leo Frank was lynched for the crime. So like Styron, Faulkner and Twain, the subtleties of life in the South add class, precision and detail. This is a must have

Enjoyable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. In the beginning I wasn't so sure because Miss Daisy was so hateful and entitled. I wondered why so many old wealthy people become this way as I've known a few myself. What happened in their privileged lives make them so bitter over time, or, were they always this way. They seem to hate the world around then and worse those who show them nothing but kindness their reaction is still to be bossy and cold. The way she treated Hoke, her DIL and sometimes Idella who'd been serving her since the age of 8 for goodness sakes. How disgusting and shameful is that??? Miss Daisy keeps saying to her son, "I'm not a racist" when clearly she was. Her son on the other hand clearly was not. He was kind to all he met even with his enormous wealth. It was Morgan Freeman who truly made this movie endearing. He played Hoke well, making me happy when something good happened for him like his raise, his "new" secondhand cars and him having his own family. His patience with Miss Daisy and how even with her bed behavior he still showed her the greatest respect and was always truthful with her. I really didn't like the ending, made me sad for Miss Daisy because by this time we know how much she valued and loved Hoke as her best friend. He never let her down and was always there for her. She liked her privacy and independency. But aging really su*ks. Although when one has money to live a bit better I would imagine it helps even if in the least choice environment. It also helps to have your bestie there by your side to help you eat pecan pie. Good clean movie.
