How do i access the battery compartment in the stove? do i unscrew something? do i pop something off? do i take a part off? instructions are horrible.

Life up the second burner and there's a pink compartment for the batteries. You'll need a small screw driver to lift the compartment.

Are the lights and sounds suppose to come on every time the burner button is pushed?

Yes they are. Did you check the switch underneath the burner where the 3 batteries go?
