Book for Students (Hal Leonard Guitar Method): 9780634093296: Henry, Paul: Books Review: There are NO mistakes and typos!!! - First let me comment on the numerous reviewers that are complaining about mistakes and typos. On page 19 the author explains that the numbers shown next to the notes are suggested left-hand fingerings. They are NOT FRET POSITIONS!!! Most of them coincidentally, are the same as the fret positions, but they shouldn't be used for that purpose! Use the the tablature for fret number positions. In the standard notation, do not use the numbers next to the notes for fret positions. This is a very good beginner book for classical guitar. It starts you one string at a time and advances from there. Review: Excellent book/method - I am four months into a decision to take up guitar as an adult. I had a musical background from previous work with the saxophone, which included some music theory and sight reading ability. My goal for the first year is to pick up through self-teaching some fluency in modern guitar rhythm and melody and some acquaintance with classical guitar. Accordingly I am working through two books - the Hal Leonard guitar method volume one, and the classical guitar method. The classical guitar volume is more difficult, though it could serve as an introduction to the guitar for a dedicated individual. The strength of the book is graduated exercises that teach important skills and at the same time sound pleasant and musical and are interesting to play. I can play these exercises in the evening after the rest of the house has gone to sleep and receive only compliments the next morning. I don't understand some peoples criticism in review about the lack of tablature - surely learning sight reading goes hand in hand with any form of classical study? I purchased both the hardcopy and the kindle version. Initially I was enthralled by the kindle version - with embedded music, I travel a lot and the ability to be portable with both written music and audio tracks is very helpful to me. However, after some practice, I decided that the small font made site reading and playing the exercises too difficult. I now use the hard copy for practice, and the kindle version to play the accompanying tunes. In my opinion, care is needed in the way you approach the backing music. To me, the best way is to work through the pieces unaccompanied until a degree of fluency is established, then use the backing tracks. Even better is to practice the exercises with a metronome extensively first. A very handy method for an adult playing interested in exploring classical guitar method, but there is plenty of work to do in this book. The great strength is that working through it will be rewarding and sound pleasant from the earliest pages.

Great book for beginners
This book is a wonderful purchase for people new to music entirely, and also for experienced musicians looking to pick up a new instrument. Beginners will be given plenty of detailed lessons teaching them how to read music, and these lessons do not get in the way for someone who can already read. The book comes with a unique code that allows access to a musical library on the Hal Leonard website. From here, you can listen to recordings of every single practice exercise in the book. In addition, the player used on the site lets you adjust the speed and pitch of the recording, so you'll never be struggling to keep up. You may have noticed in other reviews that several people have complained about misprints and inaccuracies in the book - THIS IS INCORRECT. The numbers printed next to notes represent which finger on the left hand is used to produce the note, and in different situations the music will be easier to play if you use a different finger. For example, the book may ask you to play multiple notes in a row that were originally taught with the second finger. It would be overcomplicated to move your second finger repeatedly, and instead the book asks you to substitute other fingers instead. In total, this book is everything you need to begin your classical guitar journey. Purchase with confidence, there are absolutely no misprints or errors to be worried about!

Great Method Book
Hal Leonard has produced a series of great guitar method books focused on different styles including Blues, Rock, Country, Acoustic, Jazz, and Classical. This guitar method book by Paul Henry is designed to take the new guitar student from the very basics of guitar technique and note-reading to proficiency in playing basic classical guitar pieces. The book begins appropriately not assuming any previous knowledge on the part of the student and builds consecutively from basic note reading and playing, fingerpicking, and eventually full classical pieces. Many Classical Guitar favorites are found here such as the works of Tarrega, Carcassi, Carulli along with other traditional pieces by Bach and Beethoven. The book includes a very well recorded CD with all of the instruction sections and guitar pieces performed by Paul Henry. This book is very well arranged and generally contains good selections of music for the student to try their hand at. Too many method books contains pieces that either infuriate the student or bore them to tears. This method book generally avoids that problem. By the end of this book, the student will have laid a solid foundation for further guitar studies, classical or otherwise.

Excellent book for a beginner but not for the absolute beginner.

If you are new to the classical guitar, this is the place to start. This book begins with the basics: guitar anatomy, how to sit, how to hold the guitar, which fingers to use, etc. Then some basic practice pieces, first using only the right hand and then introducing the left hand. You will learn music notation as you practice your technique. There is no tablature in this book, so this is a good place to learn how to read music. All exercises are on the included CD so you can listen and play along. Besides the many practice exercises, the book and CD also include pieces by classical and modern composers. There is a lot of material here to keep you playing for a very long time, which makes this book a great value as well.
