Good intro to modern Indian history
Excellent introduction to modern Indian History if a bit biased towards the Nehru / Gandhi family. Does give a broad overview of the first 50 years of the Indian republic.

A good read
The book provides a leftist n a pro Nehru-Gandhi family view of history. It fails to bring out the failure of government in initial phases and ignores the role of many significant personalities. On the other side, it provides a very detailed view on Land Reforms. All in all, not as good as India after Gandhi by Guha, but a good read.

"The world owes India a living!"
This is the updated version of "India after Intependence" by the same authors. The book tries to tell the story of India after 19547 to about 2008. The book is VERY bad for several reasons: a.) It seems, that instead of writing a book on history, the authors simply narrate everything, which has happened. So the book contains about 700 pages of small print.( I should have noticed, when I bought it.......!) b.) It seems, the authors were paid by the "Gandhi & Nehru Memorial Society": Both politicians, particulary Mr. Nehru are bestowed Sainthood in this book. Nothing they did was wrong, all their actions were for the good of the world and the good of India, only some lesser politicians did not seem understand..... c.) The book is completely non-critical, to quote one example: "....despite that India desperately needed US food to combat imminent famine....Mr. Nehru maintained his pro Soviet stance........" This is seen as a plus-point! (well, I guess that Nehru would not have suffered from shortage of food. This is not a book about the history of India, but a piece of Intellectual India's arrogance at its very best!

The book deserves 5 stars 🤓 but this "New Edition" has nothing new 😑 ! Detailed review [check pictures]. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About the book: This book serves as a continuation to the much read book "India's Struggle For Independence" by the same author (Bipan Chandra). Since India's Struggle for Independence roughly covers the period from 1857 till 1947, this book (India since Independence) important developments from independence till first decade of the 21st century. Authors: Mr Bipan Chandra needs no introduction. He is a pioneer of History and his interpretation of Indian History is considered the most relevant version. He contributed to the NCERTs and various other publication. He was awarded Padma Bhushan and also served as the director of National Book Trust. But since he is no more, further contribution will be done by co-authors only. The other two contributors are also experts of their field. Content: The book is written in a very simple format and a lucid style of writing. It is not meant for scholars and anyone with interest in India's recent past can go through it. No background needed, whatsoever and you would definitely enjoy reading it. It discusses various political, social, economic and cultural dimensions of India's recent history. Various political parties and their handling of the affairs of their time has been elaborated. Some people may find it political but it not possible to be apolitical while writing political history and the author uses his conscience to deliver the best. It also introduces the governance challenges in the nation and what the future may have for us. In short, it is a journey into India's ship sailing through the ups and downs of time. An alternate to this book is the one written by Ramchandra Guha : India After Gandhi: The History of the World's Largest Democracy Is there anything New in the recent version? (Launched in August, 2017) NO. Everything is same. [CHECK PICTURES] - Only difference is the cover page has been freshened up. So no need to buy the new version if you have the old one. Both have same number of pages and same content. I recommend this book to UPSC aspirants in particular since it will be easier to comprehend this one once you finish doing Modern India from "India's Struggle for Independence". Thanks for your time in reading this review. :) Jai Hind.

India Since Independence contains detailed analyses of the Indian economy, including the reforms since 1991, the wide-ranging land reforms and the Green Revolution. These, along with the objective assessments of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Jayaprakash Narayan, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Rajiv Gandhi, Vishwanath Pratap Singh and Atal Behari Vajpayee constitute a remarkable overview of a nation on the move. Remarkable journey of India to become world's largest successful democracy despite the pluralism of religion, caste, class, language and ethnicity is fluently and lucidly narrated in this book. The book is supposed to be one of the most authoritative histories of the period. Though it is analytically written, and is hugely informative but it is heavily biased. It is written in a way which feels pro-congress! Though the book brought out the major events post independence but from Bipin Chandra, a proclaimed author who specializes in Political and Economic History, such a strong bend to particular ideology and emphasis to a particular person is undigestable. Nation building since 1947 is not just a person's initiative, but is glorified by the works of various leaders from all corners of country which one fails to see here. Otherwise, the paper and print quality is good!
