How is this different from the vive pro starter kit available direct from vive for $1098?

The starter kit comes with Steam 1.0 base stations and controllers, which is the same stuff that comes with the original Vive. This ships with the upgraded 2.0 controllers and base stations.

Why is this $1400 when on the offical vive website its $800?

800 is just the headset the 1400 is for the headset controllers lighthouses and such

Is this price ($1400) for real?

This price is for the full kit which is needed for multiplayer VR. Regarding the comment about the "cheaper" Oculus...If you want a more powerful and all around better headset; stick with the Vive. If you are just looking for an entry level, non-roomscale, headset go with the Oculus. I have used every headset on the market for the purposes of marketing at my company and the Oculus is the lowest on my list.

Are these tether free out of the box? Or do I need to fork out another $300 on top of the $1400 to play tether free?

It doesn’t come with the wireless adapter. You will need to get them for another $300. The other option is to get the roof pulleys for like $30, it’s not perfect but you can’t rest easy on you won’t trip on the wires, at least not with your feet.
