Excellent piece of gear - one of a kind
I eyeballed this hat at a store then found it online at a little better, no a lot better price so I went with the better price. The first time I saw this hat and tried it on I wanted it. It's incredible although I've yet to wear it outside yet. I don't know where to start with how much I like this hat. It's super warm insulating material is very cozy - but not bulky or heavy. The shell is made of Pertex Quantum which is one of the best fabrics out there. It's very light and has an awesome hand. I really like the insulated ear flaps that can be flipped out of the way. The lined flip down brim and the pull out facemask are incredible. They took a classic hat style to new heights and made it light and compact for winter backpackers like myself. I think it's outstanding! www.letsgohikeit.com

Be wary of the size. It runs very small. But a good, warm, hat.
I like the hat. It was warm on a windy 23 degree day. It sits higher on my head than I'm used to, and that makes the small issue real. I wear a large hat, and this just barely makes it in terms of size. If you normally buy an extra large do not buy this hat. I kept it because it proved warm, and its extremely lightweight, folds up small, and with the flaps down it works very well. Glad the day it came was so cold, or I would have returned ti for sure due to the feel that it is too small. Two years later. It’s a truly warm hat, packs to almost nothing, I’d buy it again. Only drawback, other than small size, is the velcro does grab the collar of a down jacket and fuzz the nylon. I’ll end up removingthe velcro, and installing a snap.

Outdoor Research Frostline Hat
Love these old style hats. Just warm enough and blocks wind on ears. Fastener is not as strong a velcro and clogs with fibers of my neck gaiter.

Warm and comfy
Obviously I got this for outdoor activities in for colder weather (i.e. winter in Maine) Always had one of those fur lined trapper hats. Was looking for something a little more streamlined that wouldn't look too weird wearing in public. LOL Ordered this hat and love it. I will say that when It first arrived I was a little put off by how thin and flimsy it felt compared to what I was use to wearing. I had serious doubts that it would be warm enough. Well, after wearing it a few times I fell in love with it. Light as a feather, blocks wind like a brick wall, and even sheds water as well as any rain hat I own. I generally wear a little beanie under it which I do with any other winter hat as well. The beanie is simply a little skull cap, actually its sold as a helmet liner. Thin, but adds a lot of warmth to any hat. I haven't tried using the stow away face mask as of yet. But If I'm stuck out in some really cold wind then I'm sure it will be handy to have. Just to clarify how much I love this hat, I recently gave my trapper hat away. Don't need it any longer.LOL

All of the dorkiness, none of the benefits of a trapper/ushanka hat.
I was looking hard for a hat in the trapper/ushanka family, and thought I had found a winner. But as I have worn this hat through this winter, I am growing disappointed in it. The "fur" is very thin, not providing much warmth and runs fairly small. The hat has 4 "modes". 1) flaps up. Looks dorky, doesn't cover ears at all (therefore a normal winter hat is a better choice) 2) flaps down but loose. looks VERY dorky. In this mode the bottom of the flaps often push against your coat or shoulders, which causes them to flex and let cold air in to your ears. On a "real" trapper/ushanka that has thicker lining, the weight of the flaps will keep them down more, and also the bulk/loft of the insulation can keep your ears warmer, even if it isn't being held tight. 3) Flaps down and fastened. The velcro is weak, and the strap is pretty tight for my slightly large head. Not the most comfortable, but it is reasonably warm, but not really warmer than a normal winter hat. (some extra chin coverage, but not a ton) 4) fastened with facemask. The facemask works pretty well, on the most bitterly cold days. Instead of this hat, I recommend the Carhartt Men's Fleece 2-In-1 Hat . It looks significantly less dorky, while covering the ears well at all times, also includes a similar facemask. If the carharrt isn't warm enough, then go for a REAL ushanka or trapper hat that has thick quilting and fur. The downside of other trappers is that most of them don't include integrated facemasks. There are two available on amazon, but they look kinda cheap. Love this hat!
I've worn this hat on at least 50 climbs in the Northern Sierras and love it! I had to order another one as my first blew off my head in 70 mph winds at the summit of Pyramid Peak ( my fault for not using the chin strap). It's warm without being too hot and totally blocks the wind, and the hidden face mask is a great feature when the cold wind really blows. The Velcro on the chin straps holds the hat in place well and this cap doesn't seem to muffle my hearing like some beanies do. I find the fit to be true and it can be pulled down to feel really snug. I never head up the the mountains in the winter without this hat as it is light and easily packable. You won't be disappointed 😀

Perfekte Mütze für kaltes Wetter... Allerdings sind die Ohren nicht bedeckt, wenn man den Kinnschutz nicht schließt - da könnte ein wenig mehr Stoff sein...

When you wear this you don't feel any air movement around your head. Its like a personal face bubble, I love it! Not very stylish when it's only half done up but I've never been disappointed with Outdoor Research for cold protection!
