Hario "Switch" Immersion Dripper, Size 02

This is a 2 in 1 coffee maker; it's a pour over, and an immersion maker, though it works better as an immersion maker. This similar to the Clever Dripper but the Hario is made better. As a pour over it works but you have to dribble the water slowly over the grounds for about 5 minutes, the Kaleta Wave 185 stainless pour over works better in the terms of not having to dribble the water for 5 minutes, the 3 holes in the bottom of the Wave 185 are tuned to let the water pass through in about 5 minutes if the grind size is right. They both will make the same quality pour over, it's just that the Wave 185 you don't have to stand over it for 5 minutes. As an immersion maker the Hario makes superbly smooth coffee, simply follow the directions to do it right. The longer you let the coffee set in the Hario the stronger the flavor gets; I've let it set as long as 7 minutes. There are 2 things that the instructions don't tell you. #1, you need to find a lid that will fit on top, I found a plastic lid that fits almost perfectly, the lid will help keep the heat inside the device longer so it can steep properly at the right temperature longer, this is very important. #2, you need to stir the grounds for about 30 seconds after you pour in the water, this will help saturate the grounds to prevent any floaters.

I was thrown off when I ordered this because of the sizes. I wanted the bigger size however the sizes listed were different from the Hario website. I got the smaller one and thought it was a mistake so I initiated a return to get the same size sent back. Upon looking into it, the listing was typo-ed. There was no size like that and they ended up fixing with the correct two sizes. The coffee part of this has been outstanding. I mainly did French Press before switching to this and by far I prefer this method. You get the richness and boldness of a French Press without the sludge or grounds. Having the option to have strictly pour over vs immersion is wonderful as well for when you don't want it as strong or rich. I am using a course grind and it could be the filters or maybe need to fluff the grounds a bit but sometimes it feels like it takes a solid 5-10 minutes for the coffee to completely empty into the cup. Overall the design, ease of cleaning, preparation, and flavor from the device is wonderful.

Might just be the perfect pour over brewer. The methods/recipes that can be tried are endless. Seems durable and is easy to clean. Fits nicely over the Hario carafe or even my daily mug. Thankfully I have a lot of options for brewing methods but if I could only have one, this would probably be the one.

I use the Hario Switch dripper every day and I love it. Being made of glass, with almost no plastic parts, it feels safer and more solid compared to many other brewers. Hario is a really good product. It’s easy to clean, the design on the switch is very versatile and can pause the brew like that of a French press. It’s heavy and durable.

This makes a perfect 8oz cup of coffee. It needs delicate handling, but the coffee comes out perfect with a 2 minute brew. It does come with papers so you can use it after washing. I suggest running some hot water the first time. I did notice a little taste, but it is fine now. The longest wait was the shipping time. I would buy it again.
