The top pad absolutely needs to be soaked in water for a good 10 minutes
It wasn't obvious to me how it works. The back is a shade only and top has some sort of water absorbing gel in it. The top pad absolutely needs to be soaked in water for a good 10 minutes, not just poured on. You probably don't carry a bowl with you to the job sites- so I have a large ziplock bag that I pour water in and put the hardhat cooler in and let it soak. It lasts a very long time. I usually soak it at lunch time and then wear it in the afternoon when its hot.

Top too thick
This product offers reasonable protection from the sun on the back of the neck. It’s a little too long and rubs on my shoulders so I cut off about two inches along the back. The gel pad in the top does little to hold any coolness in really hot weather and it adds quite a bit of bulk under the hard hat affecting the fit. The hard hat now sits too high. I may remove it. The fabric stays wet for a while but the only really effective feature of this liner is keeping the sun off the neck. I think I would buy another without the gel top. It adds a little more weight to the hard hat as well and tends to let the hard hat fall off when bending over (again an undesirable feature of the poor fit). I think I would buy a lighter version next time.

Needed before now
This sun protection device was quite relieving of the scorching sun on me all day at work , it’s a definite purchase you won’t regret ,if you work outdoors like I do .

Works great but don’t wash in machine, gel pad in the top section broke open, hasn’t leaked through the material so I suspect it’s lined very well.
