Quite possibly the best knee pads you can own!
Dec 2018 update: These things are well worn and have saved my skin many times. They've soaked up a lot of sweat and been through the washer a lot too. Still holding up well. Rector Fat Boy pads are the best I've ever worn. Update Dec 2016. I've been using these pads for close to two years now and they're still meeting my expectations. They've had multiple washings (probably about 30-40 now) and have held up to a lot of abuse on plywood and concrete. They still look pretty good for all of the wear they've had and they've saved my knees countless times. The stitching and rivets are still intact and the material hasn't torn. The velcro and elastic straps are still as functional as they were when new. Absolutely zero complaints. I still highly recommend the Rector Fat Boys. Original review: I'm 6'1" and a solid 230 lbs. (The Amazon account belongs to the wife). Anywho, I'm a pretty big dude and I use these pads for frequent BMX ramp and park riding. I have trusted Rector Fat Boy knee pads since they first came out in the 1980's. My original set has taken quite the beating and I even replaced the plastic caps once just from many years of wear. Now over 25 years later, I'm grown and still have a backyard half-pipe (my personal home gym) and I was happy to discover that these pads are still available. My new set is just as comfortable and handles my knee slides out of ramp tricks gone wrong just as good as my originals did. These pads have an internal doughnut hole that cradles your kneecap and the padding around the the knee is thick and comfy. The large plastic caps spread impacts over a larger area reducing the impact and they allow you to slide which further reduces the force of impacts. The extra thick foam absorbs impacts so that hitting on your knees is painless. My original 80's set of Fat Boys held up amazingly well over the years - in fact they are still in remarkably good condition for their age and usage. I fully expect the same wear from the new set - I've only been using the new ones a few weeks with no complaints and many saves. (Hey, If you aren't falling, then you're not trying hard enough!) Sure you can buy cheaper pads, but I consider it worth the cost for the my knees, plus good pads boost confidence by reducing injuries. The ability to take knee slams from altitude, slide it out, and then get up and laugh about it is well worth the price. When I look at them and see all of the scrapes and scuffs on the plastic caps, I'm just thankful that the knee pads got them and not my skin! The XL size fits me fine and I'd say that the sizing chart on Rector's site is accurate. These pads are machine washable (you will make them smell!) and based on my old set, they can handle a lot of washes. I'd recommend letting them air dry after washing as well as after each use. They have neoprene wraps for the back of your legs (one above the knee and one below the knee), They also have secondary elastic straps with Velcro closures. I really like that they simply strap on rather than slide on and these pads will stay put if you get the right size. I've tried others over the years, but I'm still a fan of the Rector Fat Boys and I highly recommend these for action sports participants.

These are the BEST kneepads for derby
These are the BEST kneepads for derby, IMHO. They have a deep foam donut that circles around your knee, and are super cushy but still low-profile enough that they don't get stuck together when you're doing crossovers. Great for long legs, because they cover a lot of vertical real-estate, and they have butterfly closures so you don't have to take your skates off to put them on if you put your gear on in the wrong order.

they are awesome for crossovers and not being crazy bulky
To each their own, but these kneepads have been my life savers for 7+ years of roller derby. Flat against the knees and soft, they are awesome for crossovers and not being crazy bulky.
