What size drill bit do you use for the wall?

I live in an apartment so I try to drill as little as possible and always go for a stud which means the very inside corner of the unit. How my weight is what you want to ask and unlike myself you may have kids or pets that enter into the picture. Mine holds plants. I put 2 trim/finishing screws into it just to tack it up. I can patch those holes with toothpaste in a jam. I used 3" and predrilled with 1/2 (1/8th in at most with this type of screw) the size of the screw thru the shelf only. You can by them at the big box stores or maybe a smaller pack at local hardware they are very thin and the head is about the size 1/4 of that of a drywall screw taking a special bit to drive them in. If you go that route obviously going diagonally in as close to the top of each layer allowing room for your drill head you will get much more support than you probably need. I would post a furniture screw for you to see they are very thin and the head is so small that it will bury itself into the shelf quickly and right through if you don't stop. I always predrill just the shelf but the thickness is about the size of the ink inside a pen with a little head on them so if you went that route with a 3 or 4-inch screw aiming at a stud they are so thin you really don't need to predrill they won't split partial board you may just want the mini hole so the screw doesn't wobble. Unlike a drywall screw the head will not be visible and as long as you can hold the drill with a special bit and screw at the angle and it not have it wobble you can skip predrilling I just recommend the small hole so your furniture screw is predetermined to head right at the corner stud and not frustrate you aiming up and over at 45 degrees at the same time isn't the easiest unless you are used to driving screws is all. With trim/finishing screws, their length matters since they are so thin if you choose to go that route. Picking them up at good local hardware is your best bet HD's smallest pack is probably $10 for a 100 pack.

Could you stack two of these in one corner? Don't want it to look awkward.

I wouldn't but the shelves are smaller than they look.  Other than that it's a great shelf just don't think stacking would look good in my opinion!

Do you have to use every board? I don't want to use the extra vertical pieces at the top and bottom if I don't have to (just top to bottom shelves)

You don't *have* to, but it'd affect the stability of the top and bottom shelf a lot. They'd only be supported on one side.
