Incredible finish! Use 5 coats and up.
Plan on putting five coats or more, because the difference between 0 and 1, and 1 and 2, and so on is very miniscule until you hit that 5th coat and you will see an INCREDIBLE finish on your piece. It is easier than you can imagine. Wipe on your first coat in the morning. Do your second the same evening. By the third day you are finished. And wipe-on is correct. It's that simple. You do not need fancy sand paper between coats. Use a dish-washing sponge with the scratchy side and simply do a once over with medium pressure before each successive coat and then once several hours after the last coat. Also there is very little smell compared to other finishes.

So easy to use...
I'm an old school kinda guy, especially when it comes to woodworking. Prep the wood, stain, and then seal...Pretty cut and dry. It all changed with Minwax 409160000 Water Based Wipe-On Poly, pint, Gloss. I was very skeptical about this stuff, how can a water-based sealer be as good as a regular oil-based sealer...I have used Minwax 409160000 Water Based Wipe-On Poly, pint, Gloss on several projects, and it is so easy to use, wipe it on your finished wood let it dry, lightly sand, and reapply. You can reapply it more if you want a thicker finish, it works great, with water clean up...

Easier than the alternatives
This water based wipe-on poly is not for sale anywhere locally (at least it wasn't when I was looking) and is (was) only available in a few places online. It's a good alternative for creating a protective finish without having to worry about many of the difficulties in creating a level surface that tend to come with brush on poly, and being very low VOC / low odor makes it a lot easier to deal with indoors than the traditional oil-based wipe-on poly. That said, it still requires care to apply and it's not issue-free. it's a bit thinner / more prone to dripping than oil-based (or brush on water-based) and it still takes a fair amount of care to achieve a truly even surface.

So much easier!!!
I hate trying to polyurethane anything because it almost always comes out disappointing and it's alot of work. Never seemed to matter how careful I was or how much time I took, the piece just didn't look right. So when we decided to construct our own vanity top for the bathroom, I dreaded apply polyurethane to it but knew it had to have it. I had heard about wipe on poly from YouTube but with mixed reviews. You have novices like myself who give it thumbs up and experienced carpenters who seem to look down on using it. I decided that it was time to try the wipe on and crossed my fingers that I wouldn't ruin another project. This stuff is amazing! I loved it and love the way our vanity top came out. I kept thinking that it can't be this easy but it sure as hell is. I appled wood conditioner prior to applying the polyurethane, lightly sanded then insured the piece was super clean. Then you just wipe the poly on. No worrying about stroke marks, bubbling, etc. You will need to insure your cloth is clean, white and has no fluff on it or shedding any and it requires applying more coats than typical poly. But it's so rewarding to see beautiful clear smooth coats after each application, you won't care about applying those extra coats. It is on my list to purchase for our next project and I'm not looking back. Buy it, try it, I can't see how you could possibly regret it.

Not like a polyurethane wipe on, this is acrylic like thin acrylic glue or gesso.
Okay for what ity is, but will never give the same result as an oil based wipe on varnish. Like any acrylic it is apply, let dry, sand to level, and repeat as needed. It will require sanding over bare wood as it does raise the grain a bit. Not a rub in wipe off product like polyurethane or tung oil finishes available. I would suggest using a brush on acrylic instead if you want to use acrylic for less tone change in the wood if you want no warm tone added to the color. Personal preference is not to use this again unless I brush it on paper mache or cardboard as a seal coat before and after painting to achieve high gloss. It won't go on wood here again.

Required more coats than I was expecting but the finished result was worth the effort. I will be using oil based next time.
