Perfect Timer for Outdoor Security Lights - Porch, Coach, Pole Lights
Holy cow, what a great little device! I can't believe how awesome this little programmable timer switch is for my house's front coach lights. It was easy to connect, works perfectly, easy to program, and asthetically pleasing. Not to mention, a reasonable price. Rarely does a product live up to expectations, but this little guy is amazing. I honestly can't think of a way to improve it. I also love the random on and off feature. You can set the lights to come on a random number of minutes early (up to 30 minutes) every day/week. You can set a program to be different every day of the week or set just weekdays or weekends to a certain schedule. Or, you can set the program to run the same every day. And it is a breeze to change the program. Again, this is just a great product. Five stars!

Take your time. Read the directions.
I use this switch to automatically turn my outside garage lights on at 9pm and off at 6:30am, Monday through Sunday. I use it as a standard single pole switch (your ordinary on/off switch). I am not an electrician so beware. I turned the breaker to the outside lights off and used a multimeter to check that no current was flowing to the wires in the box where the new switch was to be installed. I removed the wire nuts on the old switch wires. I turned the breaker on and made sure the old switch was off. I used the multimeter to identify the hot wire: the wire supplying electricity to the switch. This also allowed me to identify the wire going from the switch to the outside lights: the load wire. I turned the breaker off and double checked no current was present with the multimeter. I removed the old switch. I connected the green ground wire to the bare ground wire in the box. I connected the white neutral wire to the bundle of white wires in the box. I connected the black wire to the hot wire in the box which was also black. I connected the red wire to the load wire that runs to the outside lights. I used new wire nuts for all connections and installed a wire nut on the blue wire for safety: sometimes this wire can be hot. Programming the switch is not too difficult. Just take your time and follow the directions. I suggest you program it before you install it. Remember to keep pressing the day button to see all options (e.g., Monday through Sunday). It has been a couple of weeks since I installed the switch, and it is working flawlessly. If you want a quality timer switch for the least amount of money then this is your switch. However, be aware that replacement of the backup battery requires removing four screws from the back of the switch. If you are willing to pay more, you can get a timer switch where backup battery replacement does not require pulling the switch and removal of the back plate.

Not easy, but not hard either
Was a bit intimidating reading the directions for programming, but after a minute or two it was simple. Just lots of steps to read. Also I do find the wiring a tad bit too long as I had to make room from the other nearby switches. It’s only been a day & it is operating correctly. Wiring connection was easier than programming. I ordered the no backlight because we get plenty of sun in the room & it shows the display flawlessly. I like how there is an optional manual mode as well, but it was not needed. Highly recommend for outdoor porch lights.

Great value, easy install, looks nice, some limitations.
I'd give this a 4.5 stars if I could, because it's a great value, with some limitations. NOTE - THIS IS A SWITCH - it's on, or it's off. It's not a dimmer. That means that you can use it for ANYTHING for which you could use an ordinary light switch. A light, LED, CFL, incandescent, a fan, a computer, whatever. The only issue is amperage. Don't exceed the amperage rating, and you'll be fine 1st, the limitations: The Auto/Manual switch selection is not intuitive. I'm still trying to work out the cycle, but I believe that any use of the manual switch causes the timer to immediately move to manual mode AND STAY THERE. I'll verify this later today. If that's the case, that's a bad design, because it means that you can never "override" a setting and then have the unit resume the on/off cycling at the next switch timer setting. In other words, if it is in auto mode and it is off, but you want to turn it on for a second, you can press the outside door/button and it will turn on . . . but now the switch is in "manual" mode, and it will not shut off again, ever, unless you manually switch it off. Not ideal. The Daylight Savings Time is NOT automatic. I had this daydream that I'd install it and never touch it again. I use this in a bar, and the hours are always the same - on at 11, off at 3. When daylight savings rolls around, you have to manually press a button. That button will cause all timer settings to shift one hour. Hmmmm. Not really "automatically" adjusting for daylight savings. Now the good . . . Simple, simple install. Simple programming if you stick to the on then off then on then off. If you stop pushing buttons during programming, it will end the programming cycle and go back to normal mode in about 2 seconds - a bit too quick, really, but not difficult to go back in. Looks good, works well. This product has a lot of 1 star reviews. I'd be willing to bet money that half or more of those 1 star reviews are from people who either don't have a neutral wire, did not install the unit correctly, damaged the unit with incorrect wiring, or can't figure out how to set it (manual/auto mode, e.g.). I'll post again if the switch stops working.
