will this sensor detect studs behind ceramic tile like one finds in a shower?

Hello and thank you for your question. Unfortunately, there are really no sensors on the market that will go through both tile and the cement board used behind the tile for installation. I do have a couple of recommendations for you though. If the tile in your shower does not go all the way to the ceiling, you can find the studs on the wall above the tile and follow a straight line down to the location of where you would like to complete your project. My other suggestion would be that if the tiled wall where you would like to find the stud is an interior wall, you can find the stud on the other side of the wall (maybe its in the hallway), and measure the distance to a fixed point. Then you can extrapolate the same distance to the tiled wall to locate your stud.

Can you use this on a textured ceiling or does the surface have to be smooth?

Good question and thank you for reaching out. The simple answer is yes, you can use the M150 on a textured surface. There are a couple of issues to be aware of however. The unit will work best on a smooth surface but will work on texture. Depending on how much texture is on the ceiling can effect the results. It can possibly give off false readings if the texture is heavy. While using the unit on the ceiling, if you think you have located a stud/joist, continue to hold down the button and run the unit along the length of the stud/joist. Studs/joists typically will run the entire length of the wall/ceiling. This way you can verify your findings.

Is it sensitive to insulation in the wall?

Great question. Our sensors use the change in density to find hidden object behind the drywall. Our engineers have adjusted the amount of sensitivity that the sensors can detect so that insulation will not be detected because it does not have a high density.
Short answer: No, it will not detect insulation.
