Does this item have a expiration date?

Yes. I accidentally used one that was 6 months expired & it smelled like skunk! (When not expired it smells fine.)

Is the spray supposed to be a thin direct stream? Or more like spray sunscreen? I think the can I bought might be defective?

It's a continuous spray like sunscreen.

Does this stain clothes at all?

It does not stain clothing. As a City Slicker, I usually wear black or dark colors and I have not seen any residue. On the occasion I wear white or something lighter, I have not noticed any discoloration. Of course, you should let the product dry before putting on clothing just as you would anything that you want to stay on your skin and not your clothing, i.e. deodorant.
