Clever plot, witty, well-written, good ending, worth reading
Castle in the Airby Diana Wynne JonesAudience: 10 years and aboveGenre: Magic/HumorRating: 4.5 stars out of 5ReviewThis is the second book in the Howl's Moving Castle series. It can be read as a standalone novel but is best read after completing the first book so that the plot can be understood to the fullest. The story is about Abdullah and his quest to marry a princess. The story is a beautifully written and witty spoof on the Arabian Nights. Abdullah is a kind-hearted and worthy protagonist whom readers will have no difficulty in supporting. There is a flying carpet, a genie in a bottle, and an assortment of enchanted creatures, not to forget a couple of djinns, a demon, and a LOT of princesses. The book starts slowly and the reader may be forgiven for feeling that there is not much to the story. However, the narrative picks up complications as the story progresses, and only towards the end does the reader understand the full complexity of the plot. The humor is overt in place, subtle in others. Woman power emerges as a naturally-evolving subplot towards the end of the book, when all ends well. This book, like its predecessor, rewards the reader.
