MBT Learning Teaching Pk 3rd Ed Review: ESSENTIAL book - Buy if you are teaching English (especially if taking a CELTA class) - This is an excellent book - very interesting and readable. I love the author's attitude: "This is..a guide to methodology - to what might work in the classroom...Learning Teaching is a book that can help you learn to teach in more effective ways...However, it is not a book about the right way to teach...we can observe teachers and learners at work and take note of strategies and approaches that seem to be more beneficial than others, not necessarily in order to copy them, but to become more aware of what is possible... Thus, rather than saying 'This is how to do it,' I've tried to say 'Here are some ways that seem to work" (from the Introduction to the Third Edition). This philosophy is carried throughout the book, giving examples and ideas, but always with the attitude that there is no one right way to teach. This book would be valuable whether you are just starting out or have taught for a while. I bought this book in preparation for the Cambridge CELTA class. I didn't have time to read it all before the class, but I referred to it and used it for assignments while taking the class. If at all possible, I would recommend reading it BEFORE you take the class, as CELTA is based heavily on this text. Even if you are not taking CELTA, you will gain an incredible amount of valuable information from this book. Highly recommended! Review: A Great Guide to English Language Teaching! - As the name of this superior book on teaching English language teaching suggests, English language teaching is as much about learning, as it is about the act of teaching. This book, by Jim Scrivener, is chockfull of ideas and suggestions ready made for incorporation into the English language classroom. The book also includes a DVD for ready reference. It's a very well written guide suitable for teachers early on in their careers, or as a reference book.

Years of experience through a single book
I taught for a few years and then read this book. I was amazed at how many things this book discussed that I had thought about/struggled with/ learned about. I highly record it for anyone interested in teaching or who is a teacher themselves.

Reader friendly
I had to purchase this for a class and have been pleased by the readings. The author writes casually. The words he writes feel like he is just making conversation with you. Although quite lengthy (over 300 pages), it's practical and easy to read/stay engaged. I think it's a good source for beginning teachers in general, not just ESL ones.

useful printable resources and even classroom management
This text is terriffic for beginning EAL/ESL teachers. The chapters focus on the different skills required for English language learning, useful printable resources and even classroom management. I find the book accessible and the accompanying CD enables you to observe real lessons for different types of learners.

Nice Book.
I bought this book as a preparatory book for my CELTA course. It is easy to understand, and it has improved my knowledge, with regard to teaching English as a second language.

Missing Answers to Tasks/Exercises for Chapters One to Ten
The information is worthwhile. However, if you are actually trying to learn by also working through the exercises, this book is mostly useless in that respect. You won’t be able to verify whether your answers to the tasks are correct until you get to Chapter 11. The “Answers to tasks” section that begins on page 394 only shows answers for tasks from Chapter 11 up to the end. Where are the other answers to the tasks from chapters one through ten?! I don’t understand how this book can be so highly rated when it has this giant omission, and I’m honestly surprised no one has raised this issue before.

This is a really excellent book, you can work through it on your own or as part of a course but every chapter is clear and you can come back to it later to pick up an idea or two (or more). I used this book as a main text for my CELTA course and it really was excellent. The DVD also gave lots of idea and advice to actually teaching English in the classroom There's lots of useful stuff in it, my advice? Buy it!

This book is great for teachers and future teachers looking for a method: I believe we should all read this before starting teaching, for it gives useful indications as to what truly matters in the teaching process. It's also interesting as regards teaching a foreign language (and the DVD is nice).

Consigliatissimo!

Came torn in the book spine, with cover dog-earred and shrivelled. Not quite what I expect from an Amazon-delivered product. Not a cheap book either. Sigh.
