Non-Toxic Hair Colorings with benefits....
I rarely write any reviews but I have to brag on these non-toxic hair coloring product. I have been looking for a very long time for something non-toxic to color my hair. Here is my experience: I have fine and slightly curly (frizzy) hair that is now a natural salt & pepper color (more salt than pepper) and my husband has soft but not as fine hair that is now naturally all salt color. My husband was very skeptical but as a cancer survivor had been urging me to find an alternative to the harsh coloring chemicals that we were previously using. I used myself as the "guinea pig" and did my hair first. To give you some background, I did not color my hair for almost a year and did not use any conditioner when washing my hair for that same period. My hair didn't have any chemical build-up. I purchased the following 3 products from Amazon and used the following recipe: - 50 g Hannah Natural 100% Pure Henna Powder, 100 Gram (Red/Copper Color) - 50 g Hannah Natural 100% Pure Indigo Powder for Hair Dye, 100 Gram (Black Color) - 2 tablespoons Hesh Herbal Amla / Indian Gooseberry Powder For Dark & Healthy Hair Naturally - 100 gms hesg (Conditioner Powder) - Dash of regular table salt (helps to release colors) I mixed these dry ingredients ensuring that there are no lumps. Then I mixed in: - 1 tablespoon Olive Oil (makes it much easier to work with and saturates much hair better) - 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice (also helps to release colors) - Few drops of aroma skin quality essential oil (optional - decreases strong tea-like smell, because I don't like tea or its smell) - Hot water - about 1.5 cups, enough to make cake batter consistency mixture. I used a hand whip from my kitchen to ensure it was properly mixed and lump free. Then I let it sit till it cools down enough so as not to burn my scalp. When cool, I saturated my whole head - actually over-saturated - and worked it into every strand of hair ensuring that every strand had equal coverage. Then I got some paper towels and rolled them into a loose roll to wrap around my neck as a drip catcher. Then I used plastic wrap from my kitchen and wrapped my whole head with it, catching the upper edge of the paper towel roll to keep dripping to a minimum. Then I set my timer for 1.5 hours. I was really excited to rinse my hair and see how it came out. I was absolutely delighted!!! My natural color is dark brown and this new color was slightly more like a dark copper brown color and turned out beautiful. My color looks very natural and suits my skin tones. My first coloring lasted 2 months and then I was starting to see some white peeking through. So, I did it again. I have attached a picture that shows the top of my head about 2 weeks after my second coloring. Now my husband was a different story. He is much more conscious of his "salt" colored hair. He insisted on keeping the store bought colorings going until he could see how my Henna coloring came out. He is also a huge fan of hair conditioner. So, his hair had a great deal of chemical build up. For my husband's first coloring, I used the same recipe that I had used on my own hair. Unfortunately, it turned his hair an orange/red. It was by no means an ugly color just not very natural looking with his skin tone. After some trial and error colors (we did about 3 colorings in one weekend, we came up with the perfect color combination for him). His natural color is an ash brown color. To get close to his natural color that would work for his skin tone, I used the following recipe on his hair and it came out a darker brown with a slight tinge of copper when the light hits it the right way..... looks very healthy and natural..... makes him look very handsome. Here's the final recipe that worked well on my husband 25 g Hannah Natural 100% Pure Henna Powder (Red/Copper Color) 75 g Hannah Natural 100% Pure Indigo Powder for Hair Dye (Black Color) 2 tablespoons Hesh Herbal Amla / Indian Gooseberry Powder For Dark & Healthy Hair Naturally (Conditioner Powder) Dash of regular table salt (helps to release colors) I mixed these dry ingredients ensuring that there are no lumps. Then I mixed in: 2 tablespoon Olive Oil (makes it much easier to work with and saturates much hair better) 2 tablespoon Lemon Juice (also helps to release colors) Didn't use any aroma essential oil because my husband loves tea and the smell of tea. Hot water - about 1 3/4 cups, enough to make cake batter consistency mixture. I used a hand whip from my kitchen to ensure it was properly mixed and lump free. Again, I let it sit till it cooled down enough to put on his scalp. His scalp was much more sensitive than mine, which mean the mixture was hardly luke-warm. I then over-saturated his whole head and worked it into every strand of hair ensuring that nothing had been missed. Then I wrapped the paper towel around his neck and wrapped his whole head with plastic wrap and set the timer for 3 hours (double the time I needed). At the end of the 3 hours, his hair was amazing. So, please don't discredit these non-toxic products if your first try didn't work like you had hoped. Sometimes, you have to do some trial and error colorings till you are pleased with the results. Additional benefits that we have discovered when using these products are: - the hair fall-out has decreased significantly. We used to have a huge ball of hair on the shower floor drain after each hair washing. That has now decreased to just a few hairs after each washing. - another change is that we no longer use conditioner after shampooing. Our hair is soft and fluffy and easily managed. A little hair spray keeps it in place all day long. - the color also seems to last much longer than the store bought colors we previously used. I always did my husband's colorings and had to ensure that I made time every two weeks to color his hair. Now, I do his coloring's once a month or so. - the price for each coloring has also significantly decreased, leaving me more shopping money.

Great Product. Very happy with results and application
I like this henna very much and the price is very good for such a good quality product. I used henna in the past, but this one is FAR BETTER. Why? It's absolutely natural, the texture is fantastic, very thing powder, easy to mix and texture of the mixture very easy to apply. The color is exactly what I wanted, although I'll explain the mix I made because I was after orange/copper tones on my already highlighted hair. Smell is very good, not strong at all, and it leaves my hair feeling really healthy, soft and shinny. Plus the color stays far longer than the chemical dying I've had, specially on the highlights (bleached to apply lighter than my natural color) Thank you so much to the review of "withallmyheart" which helped me to make the right mix. As I have very dry hair, I used apple + orange juice, and the content of a capsule of turmeric powder (later for lighter tones). Mixed it until it looked like guacamole and left it overnight. I applied it and left it on for 2 1/2 hours. I have lots of hair and long, so I wrapped it up with plastic-wrap (the kitchen type). Then washed it normally and... voila' perfect. In the first photo I show one of the bleached highlights (which I kept, to add extra color dimension in my hair) next to another piece bleached+colored with this henna. The next photo shows my natural roots, then the same ones henna-colored in the following one. 4th. photo is the look of my first application of the henna, and the 5th is how the color evolves with a second one (not because color faded, but because my roots grew a lot). So I mainly apply it on the roots and some other bunches but not all over. Another advantage is that white hair becomes instant highlights, so no need to bleach anything! so much healthier hair! Absolutely happy and satisfied with this henna. Recommend it totally!!

Amazing Color
I love this product. The instructions may not be all you need. I did quite a bit of online research. I prefer a brighter red and am starting with light brown hair, with a dash of grey here and there. So here are some ideas that work: 1. Make sure you mix the powder the night before. I have been mixing mine in a gallon zip-lock bag. When it is time to use the henna, I snip off a corner to help me get to the roots. In other words, this device helps you get to the roots. 2. Brighter Red (for one packet): I mix in a tablespoon or two of turmeric, five cloves, juice from a medium size lemon, a splash of apple cider vinegar. The first time I used only vinegar, and it stripped my hair a bit. If you still need moisture, I add a little bit of water. So the trick is to not make it too wet, or it drips and becomes messy. My consistency is probably likened to tomato paste, a little thicker than ketchup. 3. Sleep with it in your hair. I keep it on for a long time. This helps it reach the roots. I add it to my hair as instructed above. I have long hair down to my mid back, and I twist the rest of in a bun. Lately, I have been using just one of the packets to do my roots, it does not cover all of hair. Do not forget to put a dark colored towel over your pillow. Unless you hate your pillow. 4. Put an oil or Vaseline around the border of your scalp to prevent dying the skin. Do not get oil on hair though, this may prohibit absorption. 5. Stop whining. Needless to say, I have read other reviews online that it is messy. It is. You will get better at being less messy. My gloves broke and my hands were orange for about two weeks. It is a good idea to use the gloves when you are washing it out of your hair too. The henna can get under your nails. Unless you want that "I've been playing in the dirt" look. 6. I rinse it out maybe mid day after sleeping in the henna. Do not use shampoo. You can rinse most of it out with water. Actually, this last time I omitted conditioner too. Leave it alone for three days if possible, the color develops. I mostly shampoo with shampoos that are supposed to help with color. Another woman told me her mother used to put henna in her shampoo to help keep the color fresh. Have not tried that yet. 7. Word to the wise. Try to prevent the henna from drying. It makes it tougher to get it out of your hair. Try your best to keep it covered with the shower cap. If I have to run an errand, I put a hat on over it. Knitted hats usually work best. I imagine that the added heat may help the color develop as well. Sound like a lot of trouble? Well, try to be less lazy and count the amount of chemicals in non henna hair dye. No thanks. The smell bothered me a bit at first, but I have grown to like it. It's the smell of health. It does not burn your scalp the way chemicals do. In fact, it is a conditioner. I used to have issues with dandruff, that is completely gone now. I really love Henna. I get a lot of compliments on my hair. It is truly beautiful. Namaste.

Works great for me!
THE PROS 1. My hair color looks great. I get a lot of compliments! 2. Super cheap. It takes 1 box to do my shoulder-length hair. 3. It's natural 4. It covers my greys THE CONS 1. Difficult to apply on your own. The consistency is like mud, and I make a mess. I've been applying it outside, but I'm not sure what I'll do when winter comes. 2. It doesn't smell great, but I've taken the advice of other reviewers and add lemon juice and spices to make it smell better. 3. The gloves that come in the box are terrible. I recommend buying your own gloves. 4. It takes me a couple of days to have the water run clear in the shower, even if I wash my hair multiple times. VERDICT: The pros outweigh the cons. I'm a customer for the foreseeable future! EXTRA TIP: I'm on my 3rd application. On my first application, my hair turned a brassy color, and I did a bunch of research to figure out how to fix it. The answer -- purple shampoo! And it worked!

The Very Best Henna Powder I Have Tried - Hands Down
UPDATE—20 November 2022 I have been using this henna powder since 2015. Back then, I wore a layered bob above the collar; today it is 3-4 inches past my shoulders, so I have used the product for several hair lengths. My natural color is medium brown with salt-and-pepper grey. I do a deep conditioning treatment 1-2 days before using henna. I mix the powder in the blender with warm water, pour into a squirt bottle and apply. I do not let it bloom overnight before applying. I leave it on 3-4 hours. I rinse thoroughly (quite a long time in the shower) and shampoo once with Argan Oil shampoo, rinse, and heavily condition. I heavily condition for about 2 days after a henna treatment. Then I go back to It’s a 10 leave-in spray. The result has been consistent since 2015, with an overall black cherry look. My dark strands stay dark, and the grey strands turn a deep cherry red. I have used other powders that have to bloom overnight and the powders weren’t fine enough and resulted in a gloopy, lumpy mess, even using the blender. Hair stylists routinely ask me how I achieved this gorgeous color along with healthy hair. Total strangers stop me and ask questions about my hair color. For me, it never fades. With normal hair color, red is the hardest to maintain, because the fading is so bad. The overall color result you will achieve totally depends on what color you started with and how long you leave the henna on your hair. There are tons of color charts and web sites that will give you a good idea of where you will end up. If you have lighter hair and want a deeper red, add amla. This company sells that, too, but I have not tried it as I love my resulting color with just henna. If my hair gets gets too bright over time as I age and get more salt than pepper, I will try adding a little amla. I totally love this product and will *never* go back to hair color. TIPS: 1. Always wear gloves. 2. Mix with warm water. 3. Pull your bathroom rugs before applying. 4. Use cotton coil strands (like for a permanent) and wrap all the way around your hairline after you apply. Then wrap your head with plastic wrap (I use Costco’s version of Saran Wrap). Then cover with a disposable shower cap. 5. If you get a little on your skin, use a wet wipe to clean it. It will go away in a day or two as your skin turns over. 6. When rinsing, keep rinsing until you feel the graininess of the henna powder is gone. And don’t get in a hurry during the rinse; it takes awhile. 7. Your resulting color will depend on what color you started with and how long you leave the henna on your hair. ___________________________________ ORIGINAL REVIEW *The* best henna powder I have tried, hands down. Mixes well. Powder is fine enough that there are no lumps. Unlike other brands that have to set up overnight, I just follow the instructions in the package and add warm water, mix, and apply. Color is beautiful and does not fade. Package is marked with an expiration date so you know the freshness up front. Cannot recommend strongly enough. Will never go back to hair color.

Meh....no....
UPDATE: It's been a few days, and the colour seems to have oxidized, and is fairly vibrant, with reddish highlights. Still not a dramatic colour change, but pretty enough. Now that I've put moisturizer in, it feels softer as well. Not sure about this henna. First of all, it comes in two 50 g packs, which was confusing... I wasn't sure whether to use 1 pack or 2. Most times I use 100 g of henna powder. Anyway, I decided to stretch my purchase by just using 1 pack...but the mixture came out a bit too watery and was very drippy when I applied it to my hair. I guess that was my mistake. It dripped over everything...my clothes, the sink, hands and neck...and left orange stains everywhere that were difficult to remove. From looking at the stains it left I thought to myself, 'this henna is powerful',... but I didn't see the same effect on my hair, unfortunately. I left it on overnight and my hair looked basically the same after. I have black, kinky hair, and my roots were still black and the rest of my hair (which was brown) just looked about the same. My hair also felt very dry! I didn't add lemon juice to the henna mixture so wasn't expecting that. When I shook my hair flakes were also flying everywhere. I don't think I'll purchase this again. I've had much better results with Rainbow Research Henna.

it looks really awesome!
The product is a very fine and sifted powder form unlike those cheapo ones that have twigs and leaves in them. Unless you have naturally very light hair it's not going to come out a brilliant red like on the box. I have very dark hair naturally. It's nearly black in color and it's also straight and very fine. The color came out beautifully though. It sin't fire engine red, but there is a nice red hue to it. In the light you can really see the red in it now. Otherwise it looks more like a medium brown. My hair gets natural coppery highlights if I spend a lot of time in the sun. This looks like a whole summer's worth of sunshine all over my hair. I'm glad it's not overly red b/c I have a more of an olive complexion. Here's what I did: I mixed mine up with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar ( some people use lemon juice b/c it's supposed to help the dye release, but you don't have to use either technically). I also added spoonful of cinnamon powder and ginger powder to shift the smell to something more pleasant. I find I don't really like that earthy smell henna has. I used a peppermint/ginger tea instead of warm water ( warm not boiling!!!) to mix it to a yogurt like consistency then I covered my bowl ( plastic, glass or wood is recommended but I used a stainless steel one with no ill affects) with saran wrap and it let it to sit overnight. I used it the next day. I applied it to clean, but dry hair. Start from the top and then twist it and let it sit so you don't have to use pins. My hair is up to my elbows and I had to use at least two packets ( the entire box). If you have longer or thicker hair you will need more henna powder to fully cover it. I left my henna on for 4 hours instead of overnight. The box includes gloves and a shower cap which is a really awesome bonus. Other brands do not include either. I rinsed it all out and used conditioner to help wash it out further. After letting it air dry i noticed a very nice red hue to my normally black hair. The light shines off of it beautifully. The color should intensify over the next few days. It was easier than the first time I used a henna product. It's a beautiful color and a good product. Using what I added made the smell of the henna pleasant to me. You don't have to though. Extra advice: Aside from the mixing tools you'll easily find in your kitchen all you really need is the time for the application. The longer you keep it on the more intense the color. I wouldn't exceed keeping the Henna on for more than 12 hours though. Pure ( <--key word) henna is safe to use on your hair over and over. I could use this product every day or every week and it would be safe. If dying your hair with indigo I recommend using this henna first then the indigo powder for the deepest blue black color possible. If you mix both you will end up with more of a brown. I think indigo also has a funky smell so if using it I'd add the other add-ins as well ( peppermint/ginger tea instead of water, tablespoon of cinnamon and ginger ) and a pinch of salt to help the color stick. Like henna the longer you leave the indigo on the more intense the color.

Used lemon and let it sit overnight before I used it. Gorgeous results!
My hair is down past my shoulder blades and it's pretty thin from me overdoing my layering. I used lush's caca rouge on it a month before and wasn't impressed with the result. Before that My hair was chemically bleached and colored and bleached again several times over the past 2 years. It took two boxes (200g) to do my hair, which was a relief because I had been studying up on henna online before I decided to start using it and I read that it would take somewhere between 300-500g to do my hair. I bought 6 boxes so now I have enough for two more applications! The henna itself is really green and is very fine. I didn't use the box instructions, instead I went with the suggestions of most henna sites I looked through and used lemon juice and water. I'm guestimating it was a 1lemon juice : 3 water ratio. I didn't use actual lemon, I used the juice from the grocery store which is made from concentrate. I also didn't want to use a lot of lemon, because I wanted a dark red. I mixed until it was a little thicker than yogurt and left the bowl covered, in a warm place overnight to let the dye release. Then I applied it generously to my hair making sure to section my hair into small sections and really worked it in. Then I wrapped my hair in saran wrap, put a plastic shower cap over that, and then wrapped a bandana around it. Then I left the house and ran errands for about 6 hours and then came back and washed it out, using conditioner to help me get the grit out. I am not a huge fan of the henna smell so I added ginger powder (ginger pretty much negates the henna smell), clove powder, and allspice to the mix. It smelled heavenly. I was standing in the front of a store looking at a display while I still had the henna processing in my hair and I heard someone say "this store smells so good!" when they walked in. It wasn't the stores scent, it was me! ;) The mix makes you smell like a warm autumn pie. The color coming out of the shower was gorgeous. It darkened and got even more gorgeous and settled into a beautiful dark red-orange after 4 days. My roots are still a little bit darker than the rest of my hair, but they blend well. I was at the farmers market and someone complimented my hair even though it was just messily put up in a bun. I cannot speak for the longevity of the color yet, because it's only been 6 days, so I will update again in a few weeks! *Update:* It's been a little over the month and the color has faded out pretty much completely to the red/copper that my hair was before. The color was gorgeous but really just lacks the longevity I was hoping for. I'm not completely bummed, before this my color was barely lasting 3 weeks before I needed to go over it again, getting 5 weeks out of this color is great. The color on my roots is looking much better, so maybe it has something to do with how overprocessed my hair is. I went in for a trim yesterday and the hairdresser emphasized how dry my hair was, which could also be the issue. It also could have been my shampoo, I was using radiant red for a few weeks and then switched to Paul Mitchells Tea Tree stuff and while using both my hair never really felt clean. Overall I'm still really pleased with the henna. It did thicken up my hair and made it feel a lot better immediately after I used it and I'm in love with the color. I also still have a bunch so I'm going to use it up and then I might try the henna for hair websites henna to see if there's any difference.
