Bund German Navy TSR Rostfrei Sailor Rigging Yatchsman Marlin Spike Folding Knife

The weathered German sailor at whose feet I found this at seemed excited when I picked it up on the dock. I don't speak German, but as I walked away turning it over in my hand intrigued, he followed me briskly up the gangway, waving his arms, and shouting what I can only assume were detailed descriptions of the many features of these quality sailing implements. I wished I understood him better, because his gestures alone didn't convey the proper way to use the Marlin spike to splice ropes or undo stubborn knots. It's definitely made to be used, not just hidden away, I could tell by the old sailor's fallen, dejected expression when I slipped it in my pocket and got into my car. I could see him shaking his head and muttering as he trudged slowly back to his yacht.

I bought this marlin spike knife because I've been collecting them. I seek examples from navies around the world as well as my own U.S. Navy and civilian designs, so naturally I bought this German example. I like the knife although the marlin spike doesn't lock as securely as it's supposed to. I don't see this as a detriment for my purposes because I'm not going to be subjecting it to very much stress and not all marlin spikes lock to begin with. I've seen other reviews that rated this as a good value with no mention of any spike locking issues so I figure I just got one with a manufacturing flaw. The blade is very sharp, the construction seems to be very solid and it fits well in the hand. I'm keeping the knife because I don't think that the locking issue will be a factor in anything I'll be doing with the knife at all. If you need a marlin spike knife for actual deck work, I would recommend the U.S. Navy issue Mil. Spec. marlin spike knife from Colonial.

A solid rigger’s knife for anyone dealing with ropes & knots. I miss the Buck knife version!

incredibly poor, and dangerous build quality. All 3 sided brass rivets were sticking out and sharp edged. And, the brass blade liners are razor sharp. Unsafe for the user in even normal use.

Prime User. Item was Gifted. Fast ship, features are as advertised. Will primarily, use the Marlin Spike to untie improperly deployed or over stressed knots.

Rivets are sharp on both sides, clearly mass produced, name is already wiping off in a few weeks. Good value otherwise, serves its purpose.
