A Solid, No-Nonsense Screw for DIY Jobs
Let's be honest, it's hard to get excited about screws. But it's very easy to get frustrated by bad ones. I bought this box of 200 for a weekend project – putting together some raised beds for the garden using old scaffold boards – and I can say they're genuinely good. The main thing you want to know is if they snap or if the heads round off the second you look at them, right? Well I drove about 100 of these into some pretty solid timber with my impact driver and didn't have a single one shear off or cam out. The cross-head (it's a Pozi drive) is deep enough that the bit gets a proper grip, which is half the battle. They bite into the wood nicely and drive in smoothly without much fuss. For 70mm screws going into thick wood, drilling a little pilot hole first is always a good idea, but these seemed to manage just fine either way. For the price – under a fiver for 200 – you really can't complain. It's miles cheaper than grabbing a handful of small, expensive packs from B&Q. Long story short, they’re strong, reliable, and great value. A perfect, no-nonsense box of screws to have in the shed for any decent-sized DIY job. I'd buy them again without hesitation.

Here's a review of the ForgeFix Multi-Purpose Single Thread Screws, 4.0 x 50mm, Zinc Yellow Passivated:Overall Assessment:The ForgeFix Multi-Purpose Single Thread Screws are a popular and versatile choice for a wide range of DIY and professional applications. They are designed to offer good performance in various materials, ease of use, and decent corrosion resistance.Key Features and Benefits:Multi-Purpose: These screws are designed to be suitable for use in various materials, including softwoods, hardwoods, chipboard, and fiberboard (like MDF). This versatility makes them a convenient option for general-purpose use.Size: The 4.0 x 50mm size is a common and useful size for many applications, providing a good balance between holding power and length. (Approximately 2" x 8 in imperial sizing).Single Thread: The single-thread design is intended to provide increased holding power, particularly in particle boards like MDF, and to facilitate quicker insertion.Countersunk Head: The countersunk head allows the screw to sit flush with the surface of the material, providing a neat and professional finish.Pozi Drive: These screws use a Pozidriv (PZ) recess, which is designed to provide a more positive drive and reduce the risk of cam-out (where the driver slips out of the screw head) compared to Phillips.Zinc Yellow Passivated Finish: The zinc yellow passivated finish provides enhanced corrosion resistance compared to standard zinc plating. This makes them suitable for indoor use and offers some protection in less demanding outdoor environments.Ease of Use: Features like the deep insert bit recess and a special wax coating are designed to make these screws easier and quicker to drive.Potential Considerations:Outdoor Use: While the zinc yellow passivated finish offers improved corrosion resistance, for permanent outdoor installations or harsh environments, stainless steel screws might be a better choice.Material Compatibility: While described as multi-purpose, always consider the specific material you are working with. For very hard hardwoods, pre-drilling a pilot hole is generally recommended to prevent the screw from snapping.Summary:ForgeFix Multi-Purpose Single Thread Screws, 4.0 x 50mm, Zinc Yellow Passivated, are a solid choice for general-purpose screwing tasks. They offer a good balance of versatility, ease of use, and decent corrosion resistance. They are well-suited for a variety of indoor projects and some less demanding outdoor applications. The countersunk head provides a flush finish, and the Pozidriv recess helps to prevent cam-out.

Fence Fixation
Duncurin has been building fence panels in the back garden. I obtained the timber from my local DIY store and couldn’t help but notice the price of screws and the fact that they come in tiny packs that don’t go very far. I had a look on Amazon and discovered these screws. You have to buy three packs at this size but they are really good value for money and are delivered in no time. They are the perfect size for the job I had in mind. They fix the featherboard panels to the cross battens easily and securely. It is difficult for amateurs like me to assess a screw size online and I guess if I ordered now, I’d buy exactly the same but maybe a bit thinner. Not that the screws didn’t work perfectly but I’m thinking a thinner profile would be less obtrusive. Having said this, the fence came together really well; the screws are easy to work with and went home effortlessly using my electric drill with Pozidriv attachment. The screws are really strong and as I was working on my own, I had to create the frame and support it with clamps and supporting bits of wood. As each screw went in these disparate bits of wood became stronger and stiffer – and started to look, well, a bit like a fence panel. My wife says that she prefers nails but I knew as the bits were flapping about, I’d never get decent nails to drive home. Also, I realised that my meagre skills with hammer and nails would soon cause chaos. The other point is that nails tend to rust and then ‘dribble’ rust down your fence panels. Crucially, for an amateur like me, is that with nails it is very hard to undo one’s work and maybe reposition those last few feather edge boards that don’t look quite right – whilst with these screws it was easy. I discovered for instance as I got to the end I had a bit more overlap from the last feather edge board to go in; so I went back, released the previous six boards and repositioned them so the whole thing looked better. I like the golden appearance and the way it seems to go with the wood and I always think that work that has been screwed together looks better than stuff that’s nailed together. I had to keep checking the levels as the old fence panel had been fixed by next door with trellis that I thought I’d better not remove. As the old panel was now sloping at an angle it made the new fence look as if it was not level. I’m planning to go round the whole garden replacing worn out fencing and I have a feeling that I’ll use all these screws and without doubt at such good prices be back for more. Please find some pics of my efforts.

JCB
