I looked for hours to find good outdoor potty fake grass with a way to contain the urine so it didn't drain out of the bottom. We needed a temporary solution for a puppy that was in a building without grass very near by so I read a ton of reviews & decided most/all of what is being sold for our situation didn't get good reviews or wasn't big enough. So I found one review that detailed what she did & I tried it & it worked SO WELL! 1. Buy this grass. 2. Buy a large (I bought 30x48") plastic crate liner. 3. Buy XL puppy pads (potty training pads) 4. Cut this grass to fit the crate liner. 5. Put 2-3 potty pads in the crate liner. 6. Put this grass on top of potty pads (grass has holes for draining). // At the end of the day throw out the potty pads, spray with a non-toxic cleaner (like Better Life All-Purpose spray) & rinse off this fake grass & air dry in the sun. Repeat next day. If the pup poops on the grass you can clean off with paper towels, cleaner, rinse off, air dry. Perfect solution for what we needed & it will last for quite awhile!

when I opened it, it had a chemical smell, but it looked like a quality product and I was nervous that my dogs might not use it because of the chemical smell but I wasn’t too stressed about it because I knew that it would probably go away with time of being outside under my porch, but I was wrong and they started using it right away, within minutes of me putting it down, and I am loving this product because here in California I’m not used to getting rain and my dogs are sissies that won’t go on the wet grass so I have this on my covered patio near the doggie door so they will still want to go outside and it’s working great . I am SO SO happy with this product and so glad that I bought it!

My backyard is completely shaded. It’s very hard to get any decent amount of grass to grow. Therefore, we could never let the kids play in the yard because it was always a big mud whole. We have had the grass down for about a year and it’s still holding up well. I used four 5ft x 13ft pieces in my backyard (as you can see in the pictures). I could have used two more but couldn’t spend more than $600. So we added rock and mulch around the fake grass after a few months. It seems to have worked well around the grass. My kids run and play on the grass constantly. It dries really fast after it gets wet. Even after several days of rain the grass is pretty dry by the next day. Even if it rains all morning the grass only takes a couple hours to dry afterward. It seems to drain water well, which was something I was worried about. I live in a place where we get a lot of rain in the spring and it has done a good job so far holding up. I clean it twice a year, once in the spring and again in very early fall. The only animals that use are grass are typically neighborhood dogs/cats and wild life. I typically try to keep neighborhood dogs out of my backyard but the came into the yard sometimes. So typically cleaning it in just the spring and fall is fine for us. If I notice that more animals have been in our yard than normal, I will clean it throughout the summer as well.

Great value for money great appearance, great color looks authentic. Easy to use easy installation. If you’re using it for P pads. It was a little harder to cut. Although if you have a proper nice I’m sure you can get through it well um, I use the kitchen scissors so probably not a great idea to put up with that but I don’t think the P went through as well as it does on the sinner mats. This is so sick to utilize it as a pee pad was probably not a great idea but you can.

UPDATE (6/6/2020): Final update 1 year later: my dog has completely mastered going on the fake grass potty. There hasn’t been an accident in the house for a year now so I would say establishing a designated dog potty is one of the best decisions I ever made, especially now when I can’t go out for walks as often. However, I retired this product in favor of another one for two reasons: 1) It really does saturate with urine over time, making it stinky even after washing. In fact, the potty pad is now permanently moved to a corner of the balcony outdoors since I don’t want my apartment to constantly smell of dog pee. Of course, I did this only after I have developed a fully trusting relationship with my dog through establishing a very consistent daily potty schedule, and became confident that she would hold it inside the home and only go at the potty pad when I let her out at designated times. 2) It is a really unpleasant chore to wash this grass pad. Every time I washed it, thousands of tiny black plastic crumbs come off the plastic backing at the bottom, and bunches of the fake grass fraying at the seam where I cut it would come off as well. Not to mention, this is also the time when I would see the saturated yellow urine rinse off, and it would totally stink up the bathroom. It was fine at first when it wasn’t so saturated, but eventually it gets to a point where you can only throw it away and replace. But instead of buying another one of these to replace, I shopped around and found a dog potty tray that holds pee pads under a plastic grate/mesh cover. There is no fake grass to get saturated with urine, since the pee just goes right through the grate to the absorbent pee pad. As long as I make sure she comes off immediately after peeing, she doesn’t track any pee into the house with her paws. Cleaning that new potty tray has been a breeze compared to this product, especially with how much the smell has been reduced because urine isn’t retained within the nooks and crannies of a thousand grass blades. Since my dog was already used to peeing on a designated potty spot, it wasn’t too hard to retrain her to get used to the new grate surface instead of the fake grass with a few treats and praise over a week. You can search for “mxcell potty tray” for the product I am describing. It’s been a very rewarding experience to housetrain my dog and watch how the training successfully stops the accidents in the house. I hope this will help you and your dog too! —— EDIT - SHORTENED (7/23/2019): Update at 6 months since original purchase: My dog ended up having a total of 2 accidents in the house over the last 6 months while this was in use. This is a big improvement compared to the beginning when she was having 2 accidents every month. Establishing routines and schedules in conjunction with using this grass pad is the best way to go. What delighted me was that over the last 2 months, she has frequently decided to go on the grass pad on her own without anyone instructing her to do so. With repetition and treats/praise, she finally learned the purpose of the grass pad and would use it when she feels she needs to go. Of course, this isn't to make an excuse for myself to not take her outside for regular potty breaks, but it's dead useful when she's needing to go more frequently than normal because she's had extra water after heavy playtime, etc, or when the weather outside is bad. As noted before, this grass pad does retain urine smell after several cycles of use, even after washing with just water or spraying with Nature's Miracle. I recommend soaking the grass pad in a mixture of water and white vinegar every 3-4 wash cycles; that sort of "resets" the smelliness and allows you to keep using them. ---- ORIGINAL REVIEW - SHORTENED (1/24/2019): My dog prefers to go on grass, and inside the house that means she prefers to go on carpet rather than hard tile or potty pads directly. I live on the 3rd floor and sometimes I just don’t have the time in the morning to get her down 3 flights of stairs to let her pee on the grass outside. I figured I'd give this a try to stem the accidents and save my carpet. I cut it in half to 20"x28" and use the spare one to rotate while washing the other. I put potty pads on top of a 20"x29" plastic crate pan and put this on top of the potty pads. This setup works well to prevent leaks. The best way to train your dog to start using a potty pad like this is to first dig up the grass or dirt or mulch that your dog pee on during your next walk with a plastic bag, and put that on the fake grass. It would also help to start pairing their current natural potty with a verbal command, so you can essentially tell them to potty on command at the potty pad. Be patient if your dog shows confusion on the first few days. By the second day my dog successfully went on the grass pad. I immediately gave her a treat. I did this for a few days with her on the leash every time, treating and praising each successful potty to reinforce it. Soon she graduated to going on her own without being leashed (but supervised) on the balcony. She still had accidents in the house because she was only recently adopted and hasn’t fully adjusted to the schedule yet, and also because she is unable to access the pee pad out on the balcony unless I let her out. When she can consistently go on command on the grass pad on the balcony, I then finally moved it indoors to a corner far away from her bed and food. She needs some treats for motivation but she will go on it consistently on command now in the morning. On the usage qualities of this grass pad: the biggest drawback of this is that it does not drain well enough. It has holes punched into the plastic backing, but they are few and do not consistently drain her pee down to the potty pads below to help keep the smell to a minimum. If and when I get replacements for these, I would look for an alternative that has a much more permeable backing. In terms of smell: when it is in use, I don't smell her pee so much throughout my house, but if I do smell it, I spray it down with some de-odorizing cleaner. However, this grass pad does retain the smell of urine slightly even after being washed. I will try washing it with some white vinegar in the future and/or spray it down with Nature's Miracle at the end of every other wash cycle or so. Overall, I'm glad this has put a pause to accidents on the carpet (hopefully it is a full stop - I will have to wait and see) in the house. However, if you are using this as a pee pad, be careful that your dog doesn't treat it as a lounge spot - it should be made clear to them that this is only a spot they go to potty and as soon as they are done they need to get off it. You wouldn’t want them to circle over or lie on wet pee and track that into the house with their paws and fur.

My Mom lives in a apartment 55 and older so she can't always get out to walk her dog so I got this mat for the out side patio and he is great he goes on his mat every time. I wash it down every other day or so it dries so nice. It is so well made almost looks like real grass. It also has holes at the bottom which really helps. This is what you need it you have an apartment. It even looks nice out there. Just remember when you get it you need to rake it a few times to make the grass stand up. This is a great buy and the price is great for what you get.

I use this for my dog to potty on the balcony of our apartment. We live in a highrise in downtown chicago, so potty training puppies is hard. We have a dog park nearby, but this is so much easier. It was also super useful to housebreak him. He just rang a bell when he needed to go and we opened the balcony door; he was potty trained in no time. Since we have him potty trained, we go for walks and he goes outside like normal, but this is what we use for late-night and early morning potty trips. It is AWESOME. We use the crate tray under the grass mat with puppy training pads to soak up the urine. I replace the pads a couple times a week, and pick up the solids just like anywhere. Not super easy to clean, because we dont have a yard/hose to just hose it down. I tried using the shower to rinse it off and let it dry in the sun, which worked but then left our shower stinky, so then i had to clean that. I've resolved to just replacing the artificial grass pad once every couple months (for the price, it's worth it to just replace rather than try to clean the dirty one). I have no other complaints. My dog doesnt try to eat or chew on it, he even likes to lay on it in the sun when we leave the balcony door open. The holes in the bottom drain the urine through to the pads so it's not "wet" with urine all the time. Doesnt smell unless you dont change the pads underneath for too long. Overall, great purchase.

My rescue chihuahua was potty trained outside and would go when we took her out but she often got distracted and wouldn't fully relive herself. I started to notice an odor from my upstairs area and discovered she had been relieving herself on my $400 area rug. I had it cleaned and gated the upstairs but to no avail she would sneak upstairs any chance my son forgot to put the gate up. Well, she also was going on bathroom rugs and then my living room rug . She could not be crated due to former abuse or even gated in my kitchen because of her anxiety (believe me not even trazadone helped) and wouldn't go on pee pads even with attractant. At my wits end I ordered this and now she uses it all the time. This will be so awesome especially in the winter. I did trim the mat almost in half to fit on a small tote lid to act as a catch tray and line the tray with puppy pads. This way I can just rinse the green grass and change puppy pads. And because its half I have a spare one to use when I'm cleaning the other. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that the material holds the urine odor. I wash with Dawn and rinse with vinegar water and it still smells...but its 100% better than having my carpets ruined!
