Product description Last Of The Summer Wi desertcart.com "It's destiny, fate that brings us together. Redundancy. They just don't care that your mother used to eat insurance men and that yours was struggling to bring you up nicely as a little poof." So says Clegg (Peter Sallis) to his companions, Compo (Bill Owen) and Blamire (Michael Bates), three fellows getting on in years reunited by unemployment after knowing each other all their lives in a small Yorkshire town. There's no real story to Last of the Summer Wine, simply the well-observed banter of the central trio and a gallery of eccentric supporting characters. Compo, the irreverent and scruffy "village idiot" and Clegg, the amiable working man are well-loved figures, complemented by the middle-class Conservative Blamire (a nicely rounded portrayal by Bates) and Foggy (Brian Wilde), who joined the series in 1976. This set is a reminder of how good the longest-running comedy in British television history once was, when it was new, fresh, and laugh-out-loud funny. --Gary S. Dalkin Review: it's about pace and patience - i find it amusing that another reviewer from lexington kentucky said a lot that i would say. lotsw shows up on our pbs station on weekends with other britcoms and that is almost the problem. wedged in between "are you being served" and the antics of hyacinth bucket i like many others i suspect watched about five or ten minutes of this show and headed elsewhere. i was in a hurry for the fast laughs of almost all britcoms. one night i could find absolutely nothing else on so i watched--and the next week i watched and now it's my favorite vacation spot. the pace of the program reflects the pace of the place and its people. it does not mean they are not funny but the show is not about zingers and one liners. it's about a beautiful place that in and of itself is worth watching. it's populated by people who are perhaps a bit odd but it's a small country town isn't it. for all of the attitude of some of the players there's no real evil or meanness here. virtually all have a soft underside. even howard's extra curricular tendancies are more endearing than adulterous. i must agree with the reviewer who felt he could relax, pour a drink and settle back into a slower simpler place. if you relax and really watch the show it is an absolute joy. i fear that one of the differences in americans and brits is the attitude toward age. shows like this one, "waiting for god", "dad's army" and even "as time goes by" present the attitude that one can still be funny, loving, and worthwhile after 50. in the u.s. there is little of this excepting "golden girls". that is sad and i applaud our cousins in the u.k. for producing some marvelous television--further--programs that hold up so well over time. Review: The beginning of a classic program - This is a Region 2 DVD set so you’ll need a computer or compatible player if you’re outside the U.K. but that’s clearly stated in the description. This is where it all began. Well actually the pilot episode “Of Funerals and Fish” was the true beginning but for some odd reason it’s included on the final DVD set (Series 31 & 32). Series 1 & 2 feature Michael Bates as Cyril Blamire for the third member of our trio whereas Brian Wilde would take over as Foggy Dewhirst beginning with Series 3. The first two series are a bit more rough around the edges and certainly not politically correct but that’s what makes them funny. The show was finding its way here. Compo is still the same scruffy fellow we all love and admire but Clegg is not the timid man we come to know later in the series. Another aspect of Series 1 & 2 are the scenes in the library. It was a regular gathering place for our trio but it was phased out after Series 2 and wouldn’t appear again (except for a couple of times) until much later (around Series 24) in a different setting all together. Sid and Ivy are here from the beginning and have some hilarious rows (fights) in the kitchen at the cafe. Wally and Nora Batty aren’t seen much in the first two series but they become regulars starting with Series 3 and thus the program really began its peak years (running through series 12) in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong though as Series 1 & 2 have some truly hilarious episodes, especially when the trio decide to become salesmen or buy a used car.

Pointless antics of three loafers. Just fantastic...
This is my very favorite British comedy series narrowly edging out "Yes Prime Minister". The whole series revolves around the pointless antics of three guys, past their prime, and with more time on their hands than they know what to do with. The music, the scenery, the characters, and just the general ambience evoke sheer joy and relaxation. The dialog is superb. I watch an episode or two occasionally on Sunday afternoons when I wish to "get off" from the present. The show reminds me a lot of what I and about four others used to do in our teens just loafing around Bangalore, India. Of course, in those days Bangalore was truly India's Garden City. Today it is India's rich concrete jungle. I stumbled upon this series in the early eighties when our local PBS station (KPBS) used to air it (before the boring Yanni days!). Excellent.

Disappointed
It's very very old episodes and you only get a couple of them. I was expecting at least a seasons worth. Watched a few of them and never viewed again.

Senior Citizens can be funny when they are British
The three stars in this comedy change over time but the comedy is always first rate. I like British comedy, and this is a favorite of mine.

Not What I Ordered
I was a little disappointed when I receive this 4 disc DVD set. I simply love "Last of the Summer Wine" Except the very first series, that is, the ones with Michael Bates. He was so hard to understand and the comedy was a bit to silly. The later series were much better with character like Foggy, Compo, Cleggy. I really like the character Billy Hardcastle and Alvin. They were excellent actor and the humor was absolute hilarious. I like English humor much better than American, the characters are more believable, and the quick wit leaves you chuckling. I am sad that this program has come to an end, it was truly a classic. Bill

More info on DVD's and CD's before ordering like on CDs hearing a sample of a song and DVD's, info on when it was made.
The one of the many DVD's I've ordered, Last of Summer Wine, had to guess if that was the one of the episodes made in certain years. So happens it was shows from the early 90's. Other DVD's of same, was done in 70's and 80's and had no way of knowing till I bought it. Two other DVD's I got before this last one, Last of Summer Wine, was older ones and actors were not same as the shows I had wanted to order. But at least the last one is great. Exactly what I wanted. All and all, I've very happy with Amazon's product lines. I mostly order CD's and DVD's. So good job. Just add more info on CD's and DVD's, if possible.

It's a classic and very nostalgic. Relaxing, entertaining and very, funny. It is interesting to see how the characters started, before developing into the familiar family favourites, we love.
