Oxford EAP: Upper-Intermediate/B2: Student's Book and DVD-ROM Pack: English for Academic Purposes

I received the book before the arrival date, and it was exactly as described and I am very happy with the services and if I want a book again this seller is my first choice.

It helped me alot with my English. Highly recommended this book to the ones that are going to study abroad.

I bought a used one, but it's in such good condition that I can't even tell it's not new.

With regard to the reading/writing elements of the book, I was generally happy with the lessons. My main misgiving concerns the approach taken to teaching the 'thesis statement'; the lessons do not encourage thesis statements that contain an actual claim (i.e. a proposition to be defended in the body of the essay), but rather they tend to settle for a simple statement of purpose and structural outline. To teach students to develop arguable claims as the main thrust of their writing, one needs to go beyond the materials in the book i.e. to teach this aspect of essay writing in spite of, rather than with the help of, the textbook.

Der Kurs für 'English for Academic Purposes' wurde nach CEF-Referenzrahmen mit B2 eingestuft und trägt die Bezeichnung 'Upper-Intermediate', wobei der Schwierigkeitsgrad subjektiv eher leichter erscheint. Das Buch ist leider nicht für ein Selbststudium geeignet, da es auf einen Unterricht mit Lehrer zielt. Die Aufgaben werden auch oft mit "work in pairs" gestellt und das Buch bietet vor allem auch keinen Lösungsteil für Lernende. Die DVD-ROM enthält 12 Units mit Audio- und Video-Aufnahmen. Sehr gut ist der optional einblendbare Text auf der rechten Seite des Bildschirms, der zum Mitlesen automatisch mitscrollt. Ein Text-Transcript ist zwar auch hinten im Buch abgedruckt, aber so ist das natürlich viel komfortabler. Ein kleiner Fauxpas ist, dass der Name von Nobelpreisträgerin Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard im Script als "Christiane Nusslein Volhard" angegeben wurde (also mit fehlendem Umlaut und ohne Bindestrich). Die Kritik mag sich vielleicht kleinlich anhören, aber bei Eigennamen gibt es eben keine beliebige Schreibweise und es handelt sich hier um Texte eines renommierten Verlages, die sich vorrangig an Akademiker richten. Da sollte man exakte Schreibweise und sauberes Arbeiten schon voraussetzen. Insbesondere da hier schon ein Blick in die Wikipedia genügt hätte, um die richtige Schreibweise herauszufinden. Die Audioaufnahmen sind alle klar und verständlich, in den Videos hätte der Ton noch etwas mehr Lautstärke vertragen können. Aber da man hier auch die Lippenbewegungen und optional den Text verfolgend kann, wiegt das nicht so schwer. Die DVD startet normalerweise über ein Flash-Menü. Das kann man zum Glück übergehen, indem man im Ordner die einzelnen Audio- und Video-Dateien direkt anwählt. Für Interessierte hier noch die Auflistung der im Buch behandelten Themengebiete: 1.
