Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis are outstanding in their roles as Vince the cockney, unreliable, Jack-the-lad with a witty one-liner for every occasion and Penny the posh, prim and proper lady. When Vince got cold feet and left Penny standing at the altar, Penny got on with her life and tried to forget Vince once and for all. Five years, and a chance meeting later, Penny's feelings are rekindled, feelings that she thought were gone forever. Insisting that they would remain 'just good friends' but with emotions resurfacing a classic love-hate, on-off relationship is (once again) established. Exacerbating Vince and Penny's predicament are both sets of parents, Vince's Les and Rita are all leopard print and Brylcreem, whilst Penny's Daphne and Norman are quite the opposite, wine tasting and twin set types. Written by John Sullivan (Only Fools and Horses, Citizen Smith), this is a classic story of love, lost and found, where the question on everyone's lips is will Vince and Penny remain 'just good friends'? Newly restored by the BBC and available for the first time in its entirety including the long unseen 1984 Christmas special John Sullivan's classic sit-com is still as endearing and enjoyable as when it first aired. Review: Favourite show - all episodes - All working well and especially grateful that the preamble before the episodes start is very short - hate those dvds that have long disclaimers/rights info. This is one of my favourite shows of all time, the characters are all so well played. Very pleased to find this at a reasonable price and have all the episodes in one place. Review: Just good friends DVD series 1-3 - I have just asked my wife to order this for me for Christmas 2012. I remember the original which my wife and I used to watch before we married. It brings back happy memories for me. I loved Vince and Penny's characters,l but more than aything else it was Daphne's sparring with Vince that used to make me laugh most. I also loved the last minute after every episode during the end credits. One classic example was when Penny was hiding behind the door, asking her mum to answer. Vince guessed she was there and said 'Night Pen' at which Penny replid night Vince then covered her mouth in shock, with her hand. Classic simple but effective humour which stands the test of time. The Stones track which has had to be written out due to copywrite problems was the Stones version of their song they wrote for Marianne Faithfull - As Tears go By. Whenever I hear that song I always automatically associate it to Just Good Friends and I am really sorry the makers had to do this. I automatically think also of Penny's tears in her room after she has been jilted, a point of which I came very close to joining in with her!! Great series which they rarely make the likes of any more! I wish the current TV makers would go back to what they did best with programmes like these.

British sitcom at its best.
To my mind the best sitcom ever. always a matter of personal taste of course. It finished at the top , but left you wondering what came after for Penny and Vince , the old show biz adage of 'Quit at the top, but leave 'em wanting more' holds true. The Christmas special has a few minutes of subtitles , due to the background music ( at a party ) is by the Rolling Stones and there were copyright issues , at a party back then the music would have been so loud communication would be by sign language anyway , it doesn't detract at all. The quality of the film/video is of it's time and not up to modern digital productions , after all it is 40 years old. Where have all those years gone ....?

John Sullivans gentle romantic sitcom
This is a lovely sitcom written by John Sullivan about a young couple who were engaged and then reunited start seeing each other again who eventually do tie the knot in the final episode. This stars Jan Francis and Paul Nicholas as Penny and Vincent who originally stood Penny up at the altar and bumps into him at a bar where they reconnect and tell of their lives after going separate ways but start to fall for each other again much to the chagrin of Penny's posh mother who disapproved of Vince and was happy when he stood her up is now horrified she is back dating him. This is a different sitcom to Only Fools and Horses as John Sullivan was known for Wheeler dealer Del Boy surprised viewers with a romantic sitcom but still had that only fools flavour as Vincent was into making schemes to con Penny he'd become a changed man. This is a lovely series and I much prefer this over Only Fools and Horses even though I enjoyed a couple of episodes of Horses this is my favourite John Sullivan sitcom. If you love Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis this is a must for your collection.

Just good fun
We loved this show when it first aired in the 1980s and it is so well written that it is still just as funny now. I always loved Paul Nicholas as Vinnie and really enjoyed being able to watch all 3 series in a row. Great fun to see all the 80s fashions...did we really dress like that? The fact that Vinnie and Pen finally made it to the altar albeit in Paris without their families there was great and made a really good ending to a great series for all of us romantics out there. A Christmas special showing them all celebrating together would have been good and I would have loved to have seen how Les made Gina pay for all the trouble she had caused but we can't have everything. I did think twice about purchasing this set due to the price but having viewed it I must admit it was definitely worth every penny (no pun intended)and I would recommend this to anyone who loves good English comedies. I know I will be watching it and laughing along with the Pinners and the Warrenders over and over again.

Brilliant to see this again
I watched this comedy in the 1980s when it came out. It was delightful then and is still delightful now. When you watch it now, you can see and observe Penny's mother portrayed as the narcissist she is—wonderfully played by the late Sylvia Kay. And the wee madam that is Vince's wife before the divorce. She takes him for all he has got and is only there for the money But true love wins in the end and it was good at the end to see them married - eventually Well worth a watch and much better than these new comedies that are around today which are so woke and PC Loved the Christmas special which was effectively a prequel of how they got there and what happened before. Loved seeing 1980s fashion and what happened in those days - it was 40 years ago would you belive Well worth a watch

I have not seen this since it came out... most of it held up pretty well against time. Saw some things I missed the first time. It was great to revisit this television gem. As far as I know this never aired outside of the UK... you need a zone free DVD player to watch it in the US.
