they work!
the shampoo lathers much better than I expected; the conditioner is rich as well. Hair feels clean and soft. I bought them for traveling to minimize liquids in my carry-on, and I was skeptical. But they work really well - it doesn't feel like weird or inferior products at all - totally on a par with the liquid shampoo and conditioner I'm use to. They have a nice, subtle scent too.

Best Shampoo and Conditioner Bars!
I bought the Kitsch shampoo and conditioner bar to help downsize my toiletries for my recent trip to Rome, and I am honestly blown away by how good it is. The rice water shampoo and conditioner bars smell amazing, lather beautifully, and leave my hair feeling incredibly soft and moisturized. These bars have made my hair softer than any regular bottled shampoo and conditioner I’ve ever used, truly. Before this, I never liked wearing my hair down and straight because no matter what products I tried, it always looked frizzy and never felt smooth. After switching to this shampoo bar, I actually prefer styling my hair straight now. It’s smooth, shiny, and completely frizz-free. I absolutely LOVE this shampoo and conditioner bar, and I’m so glad I discovered it. It’s become a staple for me, and I can’t imagine going back to traditional shampoo bottles.

Way More Pros Than Cons, I'm Sold
Hair: Knee length, best guess without an expert appraisal is 1b with some a and c mixed in. Dark brown with red highlights and now lots of white strands. Never dyed or treated. Only recently began minimal blow drying with a Dyson. Washed twice a week; used Kitsch for six weeks before reviewing. Previously primarily used Pantene Smooth and Sleek for many decades. Pros: Tangle-free (almost as much as Pantene, at least once I added hair serum after towel drying). The brush catches a little bit, more than with Pantene, but there aren't knots and snarls. Once dry my hair is soft to the touch, more so than with Pantene in fact. All my life if my hair has lain on my bare arm or back it's been itchy, but with the Kitsch it feels quite nice. I have a number of shorter hairs mixed in and those no longer stand straight out from my head. I haven't noticeably lost any volume but my 1c hairs are behaving better. No constant throwing out of plastic bottles. I did get plastic ramen-noodle-looking pads to rest the bars on for drainage, but those are corn starch based and will last a long time. Also no wrestling to pop open a plastic lid with my failing hands. The clean feel lasts longer. I wash every three or four days. By the fourth day I'm used to my hair feeling itchy and greasy, but with the Kitsch I haven't felt the frantic need to wash it. Neutral: Meh scent. I was expecting something like my Ecos Shower Spray tea leaf scent, light and refreshing; the Kitsch is a bit sour. My cats get very snuggly after a Pantene wash but they don't react at all when I smell of Kitsch. On the other hand, the scent isn't very strong, and as I'd rather have minimal boring scent than intense smells, I'm ok with it. Unknown duration. The bars are holding up pretty well, except my husband tested the conditioner without asking for instructions and scrubbed the dry bar onto his head until it was deformed and enough conditioner had come off to make the shower a skating rink >< So I can't say if they would have diminished at an even rate. They likely won't last as long for me thanks to my having three times as much hair as most. Cons: Takes longer to use. I have to lather my hands up three or four times and finish with some "painting" to coat all my hair instead of just pouring one palm full of Pantene. (One lathering is likely enough for shoulder length hair). The conditioner is even harder to get enough. I'm lucky enough to have essentially unlimited hot water and a lot of leisure time in my retirement, but if you need to wash inside of ten minutes this may slow you down. The "painting" can end up with loose hairs stuck to the bar, which icks me something fierce. Doesn't stop scalp itch. I have two spots that itch a lot of the time, possibly where I don't rinse and dry as thoroughly. After the first wash, my scalp felt fantastic, but all subsequent washes have left me with the itch. Doesn't turn hair into a salon commercial. I was hoping to end up with one sleek yet voluminous mass. I do get volume, but the top layer of the hair is all individual strands, if that makes sense. Kitsch hasn't turned my hair into a silky sheet. But it has made it a soft cloud, so it's not a huge con.

A better shampoo and conditioner bar
I waited until I had a few washes in to make a review, and the results are in: it’s good! I’ve been trying to find a shampoo that meets a few specific requirements, which is easier said than done. One, it must make my coarse and unruly mane of hair less of a hassle to manage. Two, it must not interfere with my ongoing issues of shedding and scalp irritation. Three, I don’t want to contribute more to landfill waste than absolutely necessary. Four, it needs to clean my hair well without relying on harsh chemicals that irritate my scalp. Yes yes, I know, I’m picky and sensitive about my hair products. But these bars meet 3.5 out of 4 of my needs (we’ll get to that half-point). The shampoo and conditioner are both great. The shampoo lathers and cleans like a liquid shampoo, and the conditioner applies easily and leaves my hair silky, stronger, and full of volume. Point one, check. It also doesn’t seem to irritate my scalp or contribute to shedding. Point two, check. The paper packaging is fantastic… though I’m not a fan of the bars themselves being wrapped in plastic sleeves that aren’t recyclable. Modern Mammals manages to use only cardboard packaging, so I don’t see why that’s not possible here. Still, it’s less plastic than a full bottle, so I’ll give it half a check. Fourth and final point; no harsh chemicals. It scored an 86/100 (“Excellent”) on Yuka, so that’s a check! I’ve tried other bar shampoos before, and they either fall apart too quickly or don’t lather or clean well (Modern Mammals, unfortunately, had both of those problems). So far, that’s not the case here. These bars are sturdy and hold up well to thick hair. Plus, they’re budget-friendly compared to liquid shampoo. I just wish they didn’t use plastic in the packaging, but otherwise, great product!

Hair smells so good!
I bought both the shampoo and conditioner. It took a moment to get used to shampoo being in a bar. I really love everything about these. It smells great. It left my hair soft and full. I have also been suffering from hair loss. Hoping this brings back some of the hair I lost. This is really a great product! Left my hair soft, shiny and it was not heavy or weighed-down

Shampoo worked fine but not for me; Conditioner disintegrated after a few days.
It's my first time with bar shampoo and conditioner so FYI that I'm a newbie and I also don't have anything to compare it to. Good to know: - I wash my hair daily. (I've tried many, many other schedules/washing routines. My hair/scalp can't function without daily washings.) - I have chin-length hair but also an undercut underneath to about the tops of my ears... so not too much hair to wash. - I did buy the sample kit first, with both this and the castor/coconut oil samples inside. Both seemed to work well and I especially liked how the rice versions made my hair feel so I went ahead and bought these full bars. - I also bought the bar saver bags for both bars. They were hung in the back of the shower away from the water and able to dry quite quickly after each shower. SHAMPOO: The bar itself worked really well using what they call the "paint" method in the instructions, where I slide the bar across my hair and lather up. It was quick, had a nice lather, and was very easy to do. The problem for me was that this formula made my hair quite dry and my scalp very itchy after about 2 weeks of use so I stopped using it. (Whereas the sample made my hair quite soft almost immediately. That sample lasted about a week. Not sure why the full bar was so different.) CONDITIONER: It was taking several *minutes* to get enough conditioner in my hair no matter what I did. Neither the "paint" method or lathering up my hands first were much different. I would just have to keep going until I had enough. Not sure if that contributed or not but the bar itself also started disintegrating after about 2 days. It got very, very soft and chunks were coming off and getting stuck in my hair. Just grabbing the bar with minimal force would create divots. I finally had to give up after the 5th day because I could barely even hold the bar together, let alone use it. BAR SAVER BAGS: I know it's another listing but I'll also mention here that the bags didn't do much for me. The shampoo was harder to use and didn't lather as much while using the bag. And as mentioned, the conditioner bar fell apart anyway. I continued to use it for the shampoo but had to take the bar out to use it effectively, then put it back in to dry, and that was pretty cumbersome. Based on just the shampoo bar by itself, I would have been willing to try again with a different formula (and no bag) that might work better on my particular hair/scalp... but since the conditioner was completely useless, I'll be trying a different brand entirely for my next attempt. UPDATE: Bumped up to 3 stars since my mom took the shampoo bar and used the whole thing, saying it was great for her hair/scalp, so I think a mid rating is more fair here. (5 for shampoo, 1 for conditioner, so 2.5 stars.) It didn't change my rating but I'll also note that the company reached out and refunded me for this purchase. Still leery about the conditioner bars but much more willing to give their other products a shot knowing they make it right if needed.

Thrilled I Found Kitsch
I originally bought Kitch’s sampler pack and liked the rice water shampoo and conditioner so much that I bought the full size. It’s my first time using shampoo and conditioner bars and, even though there was a little learning curve at first, I was surprised how well they worked. The shampoo manages to effectively clean my scalp while also making my hair feel soft. It hasn’t irritated my sensitive scalp and leaves it feeling fresh instead of red and irritated. I found its best to lather it on your hands, then apply it. The scent is light and is true to the white tea and mandarin description. The conditioner really surprised me. I use a lot of liquid conditioner, so I assumed that the bar version wasn’t going to cut it, but I was wrong. I swipe or “paint” it down my hair and let it sit until the end of my shower and it’s as if I used liquid conditioner. My hair is soft and hydrated, but still maintains a little lift. I’ve used them everyday for 3 weeks, skipping the conditioner and replacing it with the hair mask once a week, and so far the shampoo looks like new and the conditioner looks roughly 75-80% of its original size. I would have run through a 28oz liquid conditioner by now, so that’s really saying something. I think the key is to make sure they’re in a well ventilated area that doesn’t get hit with water often. I’d 100% recommend - Hope this helps! Ps. For those worried about other people complaining of hair loss - it’s normal shedding, you just don’t see it when you use liquid shampoos and conditioners because it goes straight into the drain.
