In Times New Roman...

Great return to form. Best album since Lullabyes. I love every song here. It's a perfect roll your car windows down and crank it cd.

If you are a fan just get this. More of a "band" sounding album than a "Josh Homme" album, although the songs are some of the most personal Josh has offered to date. Great music as always.

As time goes by, the band changes. The songs change. We all grow older. If you follow the band for years, you had also changed and grew. That makes this CD another step in your journey together with the band. Personally, I am happy to be in this journey and hope the next time we meet won't be in 10 years.

I'm digging QOTSA's latest cd In Times New Roman. Known for their melodic catchy grooves and lead singer Josh Homme's searing vocal style, this cd does not disappoint!

Love this band! This new stuff is great. Love their sound. Just buy it already.

This is a solid album that I like better than their previous, but Like Clockwork is better. There are some killer tracks on here, though. It's a must have for any QOTSA fan.

Después de 6 años, un nuevo disco de Queens y la gran pregunta era, ¿en qué dirección irá?Al final, la respuesta probablemente sea: ¡en casi todas las direcciones que Josh Homme ha tocado musicalmente!Todos los álbumes de Queens of the Stone Age, así como los proyectos de Josh Homme (Iggy, Them Crooked Vultures, etc.), así como influencias musicales como Bowie, están representados aquí en el álbum.Como siempre, me resulta muy familiar, porque las Reinas son las Reinas y siempre lo serán. Ya se puede ver allí que se están recordando varios álbumes de QOTSA. «Paper Machete», por ejemplo, se parece al primo mayor y peligroso de Little Sister y el solo de mitad de la canción respira una cantidad increíble de álbum homónimo, ¡un verdadero riff de rock del desierto! También es probablemente una de las canciones más rápidas y duras de The Queens en mucho tiempo. Luego, Negative Space toca mucho con el rock robótico del primer álbum de la primera parte y luego profundiza más en la estructura clásica de las canciones de Rated R/Songs for the Deaf con un estribillo muy pegadizo y claro.Veo las canciones 3-6 como otro «paquete». Time and Place es probablemente la interpretación de QOTSA de «Material Girl». Este ritmo y ritmo de stop and go son realmente inimitables y es maravilloso llevarse bien con ellos. También es un bonito homenaje a Leg of Lamb de Rated R. Muy malhumorado, bastante repetitivo, pero casi hipnótico por esa misma razón. En mi opinión, «Made to Parade» es entonces una de las mejores canciones de QOTSA de la historia. Esta canción está casi completamente impregnada de Iggy Pop y David Bowie, pero como siempre, a la manera de Queens. La canción es muy variada y los últimos 2 minutos son pura piel de gallina. Como en todo el álbum, pero especialmente aquí, el uso de sintetizadores por parte de Dean Fertita está muy bien integrado y le da a la canción una densidad asombrosa. «Carnavoyeur» es entonces una canción flotante, pero es hermosa y conmovedora tanto musical como líricamente. Esta canción te da muchas vibraciones de Bowie. Y con un final bastante duro, también tiene un final emocionante.Para mí, una sorpresa total del disco es «What the Peephole Say». Al principio pensé que era una imitación de «Head Like a Haunted House». Aunque hay pocas similitudes, «What the Peephole Say» tiene, en mi opinión, menos villanos, pero tiene, en particular, en el segundo estribillo «Tonight is the night...», unos vínculos muy buenos con el rock de los 80, en particular debido a los coros.Con «Sicily» viene la canción que muy probablemente podría haber estado en «Lullabies to Paralyze». Pero el estribillo y el riff en realidad suenan como algo completamente nuevo: ir más en la dirección de Bauhaus/Goth. Puede que la canción necesitara un poco más de variedad, pero el riff y el ambiente de la canción compensan muchas cosas, extremadamente oscuras y pesadas.Con «Emotion Sickness», se toma entonces otra dirección. Muchas vibraciones de Era Vulgaris y Eagles of Death Metal, que luego culminan con este dulce estribillo del glam rock de los 70. Nunca habías oído eso antes con las Queens, al menos. También escuchamos más reinas clásicas en este disco y, al final, hay algo para todos los fanáticos de Queens o Josh Homme en general. En lugar de un clásico best of, ¡los Queens simplemente han hecho más uso de sus puntos fuertes aquí y han hecho un álbum muy fuerte con ellos! Al final, siempre es subjetivo, por supuesto, pero estoy muy contento de que los Queens tengan ahora un poco más de energía que en los dos últimos álbumes, que también estaban muy bien, pero iban en una dirección diferente. Esto tampoco es del todo insignificante debido a la integración significativamente mejor de Mickey Shoes (bajo) y Jon Theodore (batería). Nach 6 Jahren eine neue Platte der Queens und die große Frage war, in welche Richtung wird diese gehen?Am Ende kann die Antwort wohl lauten: In so ziemlich jede Richtung, die Josh Homme jemals musikalisch berührt hat!Sowohl alle Alben der Queens of the stone age, als auch Projekte von Josh Homme (Iggy, Them Crooked Vultures etc.) und dazu noch musikalische Einflüsse wie Bowie sind hier im Album vertreten.Es fühlt sich vieles wie immer sehr vertraut an, denn die Queens sind die Queens und werden sie immer bleiben. Dieser unique Sound ist nie zu überhören. Durch den Mix dieser Einflüsse auf "In Times new roman" bekommt die Platte eine Art Retrospektive des Lebens von Josh Homme. Was auch wunderbar erstens zu den sehr persönlichen Lyrics auf diesem Album passt, als auch zu Joshs doch sehr bewegtem Leben im allgemeinen, aber insbesondere der letzten Jahre (verstorbene Freunde, Eheaus plus Krach mit der Ex-Frau, Therapie, Krebserkrankung).Die Platte enthält sowohl recht klassiche QOTSA-Stücke, wie z.b. der Run der ersten drei Songs. Schon dort ist zu erkennen, dass etliche QOTSA-Alben reminisziert werden. "Paper Machete" z.b. wirkt wie der große gefährliche Cousin von Little Sister und das Solo in der Mitte des Songs haucht unfassbar viel Self-Titled Album aus, ein richtiges Desert-Rock Riff! Zudem wohl einer der temporeichsten und härtesten Songs der Queens seit langem. Negative Space spielt dann im ersten Teil auch sehr viel mit dem Robot-Rock vom ersten Album und schweift dann eher in die klassische Rated R/Songs for the Deaf Songstruktur mit einem sehr eingängigen und klaren Refrain ab.Die Songs 3-6 sehe ich als weiteres "Package". Time and Place ist wohl die QOTSA-Interpretation von "Material Girl". Dieser Stop and Go-Beat und dieser Groove sind wirklich unnachahmlich und laden wunderbar zum mitzappeln ein. Zudem auch eine schöne Hommage an Leg of Lamb von Rated R. Sehr verschroben, recht repetitiv, aber gerade deswegen fast schon hypnotisch. "Made to Parade" ist dann meiner Meinung nach einer der besten QOTSA-Songs ever! Dieser Song ist nahezu nur so durchtränkt von Iggy Pop und David Bowie, aber wie immer auf die Queens eigene Art und Weise. Der Song ist extrem abwechslungsreich und die letzten 2 Minuten sind Gänsehaut pur! Wie auf dem ganzen Album, aber besonders hier, ist auch der Einsatz der Synthies von Dean Fertita extrem gut eingebaut und verleiht dem Song eine unheimliche Dichte. "Carnavoyeur" ist dann ein dahinschwebender Song, der aber sowohl musikalisch und lyrisch wunderschön und ergreifend ist. Dieser Song gibt einem extrem viele Bowie-Vibes. Und hat mit dem recht harten Ende auch eine spannende Pointe.Für mich eine totale Überraschung auf der Platte ist "What the Peephole say". Dachte zuerst,dass sei eine Nachahmung von "Head like a haunted house". Auch wenn minimale Ähnlichkeiten dabei sind, ist "What the Peephole say", meiner Meinung nach weniger Villains, sondern hat insbesondere im zweiten Refrain "Tonight ist the night...", insbesondere durch die Background Vocals richtig schöne 80s Rock-Anleihen.Mit "Sicily" kommt dann wohl der Song der am ehesten noch hätte auf "Lullabies to paralyze" sein können. Der Refrain und das Riff hört sich dann aber tatsächlich mal nach etwas ganz neuem an: Geht eher in die Richtung Bauhaus/Goth. Der Song hätte eventuell noch etwas mehr Abwechslung vertragen, das Riff und die Stimmung in dem Song entschädigen aber für vieles, extrem dark und heavy.Mit "Emotion Sickness" wird dann wieder eine andere Richtung eingeschlagen. Viele Era Vulgaris und Eagles of Death Metal-Vibes, die dann aber in diesem zuckersüßen 70s - Glamrock Refrain münden. Hat man so zumindest bislang bei den Queens auch noch nie gehört. Eingängiger ginge es fast gar nicht mehr und der Herzschmerz ist im Gesang von Josh Homme klar zu spüren.Das epische Ende setzt dann "Straight Jacket Fitting", welches eher an den Prog und Classic-Rock von Them Crooked Vultures erinnert. Im Mittelteil dann aber mit dem Sprechgesang von Josh die Ausfahrt "The Doors und Roadhouse Blus" nimmt. Die letzten 2 Minuten wiederum erinnern dann stark an "Kyuss" und "Space Cadet", welches ein sehr schönes Ende darstellt.Nach Villains, welches zwar songtechnisch sehr gut war, aber einfach schlecht produziert wurde, ist die Produktion diesmal viel klarer und kraftvoller. Zudem hören wir auf dieser Platte wieder mehr Classic-Queens und im Endeffekt ist für jeden Queens oder überhaupt Josh Homme-Fan etwas dabei. Statt einem klassichen Best-of haben die Queens sich hier einfach ihrer Stärken wieder mehr bedient und daraus ein sehr starkes Album gemacht! Am Ende ist es natürlich immer subjektiv, aber ich bin durchaus sehr froh, dass die Queens jetzt wieder etwas mehr Saft als auf den letzten 2 Alben haben, die zwar auch sehr gut waren, aber doch in eine andere Richtung gingen. Dies liegt auch nicht ganz unerheblich an der deutlich besseren Einbindung Mickey Shoes (Bass) und Jon Theodore (Drums). Beide sind hier klarer vernehmbar und bringen dem Album so deutlich mehr Würze. Letztlich muss man aber vor allem sagen, macht das Album enorm viel Spaß, lädt sowohl zum Headbangen, als auch zum tanzen, aber auch nachdenken ein.

Ho sentito una notizia incredibile! Sembra che il vinile venda meglio del cd, ma se si scava bene negli usi e nei costumi degli ascoltatori si scopre che poi molti di questi vinili restano all’interno della confezione, e i loro solchi non verranno mai esplorati dalle puntine dei giradischi. Cavolo ragazzi, davvero siamo ridotti così? Ma il piacere dello “spin black circle”? dove lo abbiamo dimenticato? Non mi metto su un piedistallo, occhio, in auto ascolto il cd, ovvio, ne ho mazzetti distribuiti nel cruscotto, nelle “tasche” degli sportelli quando vado a fare la spesa le mie cuffie “pescano” musica dal mio lettore mp3, mica voglio negare l’evidenza, però se prendo un vinile, per quanto sia colorato, limited edition, autografato, deluxe, ebbene quel vinile deve finire sul piatto d’acciaio. Per forza! Qualcuno ha alzato la mano e ha detto “ma così si graffia”, no, tranquillo, a meno che non si abbiano artigli di adamianto di Wolverine non c’è questo pericolo. Ho sentito dire “ma così perde valore”, pezzodiequino, ma compri un vinile per poi rivenderlo, forse, tra quarant’anni sperando di monetizzare? Suvvia, meglio se compri e vendi oro. Consiglio per tutti (i 4 lettori di questa rece) prendete i vinili e ascoltateli, poi girate e riascoltate, così ad libidum.Nuovo lavoro delle Regine dell’età della pietra, e non era scontato (un cinguettio mi ha riferito che Josh ha lottato contro un tumore), in versione due vinili (ripeto due vinile, come diceva quello? Du gusti s megl che uan? Appunto). Che poi proprio la musica dei QOTSA sembra fatta per essere ascoltata sul vinile, tutte quelle chitarre sature, quel “rock desertico” si sposa a meraviglia con il fruscio statico del giradischi. Il disco ha il sound che ti aspetti, quello “puntuto” e “angolare”, con quella voce inconfondibile, con i piccoli coretti al servizio dello spettacolo live, gli stop and go scanditi dalla batteria che fanno saltellare le chiome, c’è tutto quello che uno vuole da un album così. Dicono (e non sono io) che sia un grande ritorno, in questo caso sono di parte, a me già piacevano un mondo(cane) quando si chiamavano Kyuss, figurati tutte le evoluzioni che hanno fatto, e quando hanno suonato per quel monumento vivente che è Iggy Pop, li ho dato l’attestato di merito duraturo, qualsiasi cosa suonino (va beh, non proprio qualsiasi, ovvio). Per esempio “Negative Space” ha un buon tiro da singolo (e possibile classico da concerto), e arriva l’ultima traccia del primo lato, “Time & Place”, che strizza l’occhio all’elettronica (che gli UFO siano atterrati nel ranch della Luna?). Ora bisogna girare il vinile (che bello) per ascoltare il resto dell’album, non si hanno cedimenti di sorta, non ci sono cose “strane”, Josh e company rimangono sul solidissimo territorio rock che ho apprezzato negli anni. Arriva così l’ora di ascoltare il loro primo singolo (o forse è il secondo estratto? Non ricordo bene) che è “Carnavoyer”. Aggiungo una cosa, quelli conlapuzzasottoilnaso di Pitchfork hanno recensito l’album affermando che i QOTSA sono ritornati ad una “primitività blues”, sai che ti dico? La definizione mi piace assai, e secondo me è abbastanza azzeccata: blues primitivista del 2023, of course. Intanto io metto sul piatto l’altro vinile (ma quanto mi sento bene nel farlo?), e interrompo le comunicazioni. Buoni e primitivi Ascolti!p.s. furbacchioni, la versione in vinile, sul lato D, contiene una cosa molto "anni '90" ... personalmente non le ho mai sopportate, però su vinile non avevo mai visto questo. Buoni vinilici Ascoltip.p.s.: per i furbacchioni che si lamentano dell'assenza dei testi, ebbene nella versione in vinile ci sono! Buone Letture!

I write this as I listen to the vinyl for the first time and I’m only halfway through side 2 (of 3 & a bit sides), so it’s really fresh in my ears! Straight off - it passes the ‘Old Grey Whistle Test’! (Look it up…)I got into QOTSA with their album, ‘Certified R’ and have followed them ever since. So yes, this will be slightly biased but an honest approach. That said, I have seen their meandering through the wilds of their music career, watching and listening to all they had to offer.The previous full album studio release, “Villains”, took a leap into the eclectic world of hi-fidelity with the inclusion of producer extraordinare, Mark Ronson for whom I also have a deep respect. It is a great album but obviously this was not the approach that really suited Josh and the Queens! And moreso, I missed that lo-fi ambiance that is so ‘QOTSA’! It seemed to be a “glitzy stifled’ offerin. I believe that all the aforementioned really had an effect on their creative process. I know how much they like to f… about in the studio, with their own way of experimentation and more importantly, time.So ‘In Times New Roman’ is without the hi-fi and it seems, the lure & distraction of the great ‘outside’ & they are back plotting their own path in their own way - sort of “regression-progression” as it implies, ‘In Times New Roman’ and I applaud them. For it truly is all about the music.The only downside of the album is there’s not enough of it! Come on Josh, I know there is whole load of other stuff you created and could have included at the same time!“Nicotine, vallium, viadin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol…” indeed!PS: Yet again Amazon sent me warped vinyl offering. Wake-up Amazon, I’m starting to sound like a stuck stylus. Sort it out!

È stato annunciato in un video teaser l'11 maggio 2023, ed è il primo album della band dai tempi di Villains (2017). L'annuncio è avvenuto insieme all'uscita del singolo principale, "Emotion Sickness".In Times New Roman... segna la conclusione della trilogia di album della band pubblicati tramite Matador Record.
