I can see the input plugs, but what is the output plug? USB, Apple lightning?

It uses a USB Type A Connector for connection to a computer using the USB 2.0 or higher communication protocol. So it is forward compatible with the USB 3 and USB4 communications protocol. The USB Type C connector, however, is not backwards compatible with the simple USB 1.1 and 2.0 connectors. The simple work-around is to just use a USB mini hub or dock with three or four Type A receptacles and a USB C connector (instead of an adapter). It's likely to even cost less than a USB 3.x to USB C adapter (which won't work) anyways. Just make sure it's not a dedicated Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port. Thunderbolt 3 & 4 mainly & exclusively use the USB C connector (respectively), but Thunderbolt is a different protocol. (Macs with a USB C port AND one or more USB 3.x Type A ports, used the USB C for Thunderbolt only).

What format is the converted file in? Can you change this to other formats (.AVI, .DVIX, ect)?

If you use VirtualDub you can output your video in different formats. I output to raw AVI so I can cut my video into smaller segments in Adobe Premiere without sacrificing quality. VHS quality is already so poor, I don't want to lose any of it by re-encoding mp4/h264 files.

Can I transfer my VHS videos thru my Mac and save them all on an external hard drive to save space on my Mac?

Yes, the software will give you an option for a destination for the captured videos. Just make sure that the drive is hooked up when you run the software and select that drive as a destination. Depending on the speed of the connection (USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt), it may take from a little to a lot longer than to do it to your local HD. If that turns out to be very slow, and you want to do a lot of converting at one time, another option is just to save one video to your Mac's drive, and then move it to the external HD while you're converting the next movie.

how long is the cable.

on one end about 100cm for the USB cable middles is a 10 cm elgato capture thingythen short 10+cm cables on the other end for s-video and composite

Seamless, easy to use

Fantastic! Works so easily. If you have a little technical understanding, you know which cables you need to connect to your analogue device. It has RCA or S Video options so good for most devices. Software is basic but effective and I can now watch my videos from the 90s! Very very pleased with this product.

Amazing Amazon. I wish I'd bought this in the ...

Delivered next day. Amazing Amazon. I wish I'd bought this in the first place. I'd ordered a cheaper video grabber and the audio had failed, so bought the Elgato instead. Brilliant, intuitive software and excellent picture and sound quality with no dropped frames. I've bought Elgato products before, and I really wish I'd bought this first. Set up was completely painless and intuitive. The software is well-designed and does all the work for you. Would buy from this company again.

Good quality, very efficient with storage space. Reliable

Quality very good, one of the few capture devices that gives a pretty good quality for SD video. Very efficient. I used to archive with a data video dac200.... can’t get the adapters for that to the new macs now... this Elgato is far more efficient (mpg4) 1 hour is just over one gb in size (the old sac was 13 gb for an hour at nov.) Add extreme motion, like sprinting, or tennis game, there is a bit of pixelisation, but for general video the quality is excellent. I archive quite a few tapes, and I’m very happy with it.

Well worth the money, easy to use and decent software

Used to transfer old VHS films onto PC. Really easy to set up software and worked first time. Remember to set the right aspect ratio and away you go. Software also allows you to adjust video in case you need to adjust saturation etc

So easy, even on mac

This was so easy to use, I was apprehensive about transferring all my family's hi8 videos but this was a breeze. The only thing I'd note is you have to go and download the software from the website. Transferred from a Sony handycam to macbook pro
