Disney and Pixar's "Elemental" is an original feature film set in Element City, where residents of Fire, Water, Earth and Air live together. The story introduces Ember, a tough, quick-witted and fiery young woman, whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in. Directed by Peter Sohn ("The Good Dinosaur," "Partly Cloudy" short), written by John Hoberg & Kat Likkel and Brenda Hsueh, produced by Denise Ream ("The Good Dinosaur," "Cars 2"), and featuring the voices of Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie as Ember and Wade. Review: I recommend - OMG! So cute. This is a perfect family movie. The quality of the movie and the plot is great. Review: Cute movie for the family - I took all 3 of my girls to watch this in the movie theaters. Once they found out that this was available to rent on desertcart, they begged me to rent this movie which I did. It's a cute movie and would let my kids watch it a thousand times.

A great movie with a lovely message!
Finally, a new animated movie worth purchasing! We LOVE love LOVE elemental! The plot is relevant, a young woman who is following in her father’s footsteps out of familial love and a lot of guilt even if her heart just isn’t in it.. she’s trying to understand why her emotions are so strong and can’t seem to get to the bottom of her “moods” until a fella from the other side of the city spends some time with her and helps her see things in a new way. They are a match but their love is doomed- water and fire do NOT mix! Her father has banned water from entering his shop! What will happen? WOW. What a great message about how different we can be from our friends BUT also how much we benefit from having others who are different in our lives! We need to learn about other’s culture, their history, how they think to see progress! Our takeaway wasn’t the same ole “we are all the same” racial message that we’ve seen before, in Elemental our kids are challenged to accept their differences and learn that sometimes we need more than one kind of person, ethnicity, ability, mind in our community and we should love that we can learn and grow with each other. I love that we are celebrating the diversity rather than trying to shove everyone into their own corner or make them assimilate to what’s comfortable for someone else. Ember was pushed to see herself and the world around her through Wade’s eyes and though standing up to her father was difficult she began to see how important being active in changing things was. Good stuff! :)

Ordinary, But Very Well Done
This is what we expect from Pixar visually -- imaginative characters and situations all well realized. The plot is pretty obvious, however. This is a simple story of a young woman coming of age and finding her true love. There are, of course, many obstacles to be overcome. It does have an immigrant family theme, and economic disparity between the families. But not enough to rise above the rom-com level. Which may be a good thing or a less-good thing, depending on how you feel about rom-coms.

A visual treat that explores themes of immigration and following our dreams.
I initially wasn’t too sold on the concept of Elemental (2023). The idea that elements live together in a city felt a bit too close to Zootopia (2016) to be truly original. However, Pixar (generally) has a good handle on stories, and I eventually gave this one a shot. I was surprised to find not only an approachable love story—which is rare for Pixar—but a touching look at expectations from immigrant parents and what it’s like to integrate into a society that isn’t made for you. As always, the visuals were striking, and the emotions were heartfelt. While the movie poked fun at certain human-based design decisions for the city (like when both main characters easily pass through a chain-link fence), the overall concept felt thought out enough to truly invoke the ethnic boroughs that many cities have for immigrants of similar ethnic backgrounds. Choosing the fire people to be the “odd element out” was a smart move since air, earth, and water usually work well together and are negatively affected by (or negatively affect) fire. That sense of not belonging in a new space just based on who you are struck home. With the latest string of Pixar films focusing on parent-child relationships, Elemental feels a bit more grown up than dealing with a missing parent (Onward (2020)) or handling the changes that come with puberty (Turning Red (2022)). Even Luca (2021) seemed more focused on younger children leaving the nest instead of independent adult children who want to pursue their own dreams. That’s probably why Elemental successfully managed to bring romance into a production company that has focused on non-romantic stories for over 20 years. A visual treat that explores themes of immigration and following our dreams, I give Elemental 4.5 stars out of 5.
