Just in case anyone is interested, this is a proprietary filter, it won’t work with any other magnetic adaptor you may have, as there are notches on the ring that sits into the channel of the adapter. If you have a flush mounted magnetic adaptor it won’t work, and secondly the magnets aren’t strong enough in my humble opinion to stay on the adapter; using this for a few days the ND filter has already popped off a couple of times and landed on the ground. If you’re expected to use this “handheld” as it is for smartphone use, then realistically things should be more secure. You’re more likely to knock a filter off that’s actually touching your hand, vs a 82mm polarizer that’s on the end of a zoom lens that you never touch. It’s like the opposite. I’d rather have a magnetic filter on my massive mirrorless camera, rather than a smartphone that’s being manhandled. Why did you try to reinvent the wheel with this design? It’s super foolish, and now I’ve had to buy step up rings that I’ve actually welded onto your adapter — now I have to live with those magnets ever again and I can use actual filters from other companies instead of having to use your green-tinted ND filters that are super overpriced for what they are. If you do buy this filter, please be careful when handling it. Even if you’re holding your phone weird and want to quickly change the strength of your filter it could accidentally pop off if you press it the wrong way….

I am using an extended set of products from Smallrig because that are a notch above the others in term of quality and innovation. However, for this variable ND filter, I am very disappointed by the vignetting that occurs. My setup is an iPhone 14 pro max with a Smallrig cage and the Smallrig filter adapter. When using the 1X back camera, there is a lot of vignetting at ND32. The fact that it is a magnetic filter offers the possibility to place the dark spots where it is less inconvenient but it is definitely not great in any case... When using the back telephoto lens, the problem is minimal but the quality of the video is lower because of the Apple hardware. I am surprised that no one mentioned that in the other comments.

This magnetic lens from SmallRig is really good — great functionality overall. I’m giving it 4 stars because it feels a bit fragile. You have to be careful when attaching it to your cage since it doesn’t lock in very securely and could fall off if not handled properly.
