Intel TB4 expansion (X670E) superior to Asmedia USB 4.0 i(X870E)
I went with the X670E instead of the X870E because it has a Thunderbolt header. The X870E uses its four PCIe lanes for an Asmedia USB 4.0 controller, which means no Thunderbolt header. I rely on the Thunderbolt header for my Asus Thunderbolt PCIe expansion, giving me 100W Power Delivery and an Intel chipset, whereas the X870E only offers 60W and an Asmedia controller. Some might wonder why that's a big deal since USB 4.0 is based on Thunderbolt 3 and 4. The truth is, many Thunderbolt devices I've tested don’t show up when connected to the Asmedia USB 4.0 controller. I have Thunderbolt 4 devices I use with my Mac, and they definitely benefit from that 100W Power Delivery. My new Mac has Thunderbolt 5, and Asus does sell a Thunderbolt 5 PCIe card; it's listed as only officially compatible with Intel’s Z890 chipset, which makes sense since Thunderbolt is Intel. That being said, just because it’s not on the compatibility list doesn’t mean it won't work with a non-Intel Z890 chipset. The TB5 card hooks up through the same motherboard header as the TB4. Windows might still recognize it. I have managed to get a Thunderbolt 4 expansion card working on the Asus X99-A from back in 2014, just using the same Thunderbolt header. When the Asus Thunderbolt 5 Card becomes more readily available, I will attempt to use it. It will probably get partial support meaning detected by Windows, but there probably won't be anything in the UEFI.

Great for Linux.
Works flawlessly with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. My guess is that it will work with any Linux distribution.
