Easy to follow
I bought this workbook for my son's Year 5 summer holiday homework, to help him revise what he learned. The pages are well-structured, so my son was able to work through it on his own. It covers the entire syllabus and is perfect.

Year 5 Mental Maths
I'm usually impressed with Collins revision and study materials and this book is as good as I expected. The 'How to Use This Book' section at the front gives you a quick overview of what's included in the book and is well worth reading, especially if this is your first workbook. I really like the use of a smiley face system - Had a Go; Getting There; Got it! - to rate how well your child has done on each section, because it's looking at improvement and practice in a positive way. I like that is follows the same format as the book for year 4. The book is matched to the National Curriculum for Year 5 and covers a whole range of mental maths skills including - place value, angles, translations, tables, volume, capacity, percentages, geometry and a lot more. It's split into double page spreads for each topic with three challenges of increasing difficulty. The text is clear and easy to read and I like the use of colour throughout the book. There are also eight audio tests in the book (these can be accessed through the QR codes in the book) and four Progress Tests. The answers are included in the back of the book and I much prefer this to having to go online to get answers. I think the most useful pages (for me) were the "Practising Mental Maths at Home" which is about incorporating mental maths practice into your daily life - time, measurements, fractions, estimations and roman numerals. It's useful to know that for Roman Numerals - I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000 (I did not know D before this book, though my son did, and yes, I did have to look it up in the answer section.) Overall - I think this is a great resource if your child would like to do extra practice to improve their mental maths in Year 5.
