Review: Great reading avec a look at the 1930's. - The Mid-west comes alive with mooks and molls, dollfaces- and an absence of a wish to mention Shirley Temple- as The Old Masters of bankjobs work en plein air to evoke 'le vie du takedown'. This isn't Ford Madox Ford, this is Thompson Stephen Thompson, with great phrasery like-"shooting at nowhere and hitting it precisely"- and "taking a swim with a refrigerator". The Grumleys were back- with Michael Bolton haircuts- and they were a great addition to pique and scratch the surface of contemporary american life. Review: We had Bob Lee and Earl, now granddaddy Charles F Swagger is taking names and kicking ass, - This is a big big improvement on the last few books, which, though readable, seem to have lost a huge amount of sheen. Raw and exciting again.

Just what i have wanted a good novel about a fascinating period in American History. Im an old Swagger fan of 20 odd years and its pure escapism and fun. Love to see one about a Swagger back in the days of Wyatt Earp and friends!

Best Selling author Stephen Hunter gives us another Swagger Family tale that ties three different stories together that end up solving what happened during the events of a mysterious period of their family history. In today's world Bob Swagger is researching the life of his grandfather, Charles Swagger. Stephen Hunter artfully weaves the three stories together as Bob's research uncovers events as they unfolded in the early 1930's during The Great Depression. These were the "hey days" of the famous bank robbers known as John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson, and others. This was also the time when the Department of Justice founded the Federal Bureau of Investigation (primarily) to take down these same bank robbers. The soon-to-be famous Italian Mafia was taking baby steps but had not yet grown to be a major threat. However, while the FBI was targeting the bank robbers, the Mafia was working under the smoke screen to get themselves organized. . Stephen Hunter obviously did a ton of research into the early 1930's and it is quite apparent that he loved doing it. He is able to paint a vivid picture of that time period using popular jargon and idioms, the styles of the day, the cars used by the bank robbers, and the personalities and actions of the various "Public Enemies Number One" as pursued by the newly created FBI. Very realistic and factual events are presented both from the criminals' perspectives as well as from those of the FBI's Special Agents. Mr. Hunter has ratcheted up his writing style in this novel and his delivery is fast and punchy with enough detail to allow you to visualize the scenes without distracting you with too much information. This novel is also a great feast for the firearms aficionado. While not dominating any scene, the additional details provided on these guns helps the reader understand the advantages and disadvantages of the unique firearms used in the 1930's. The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), Thompson Machine Gun (Tommy Gun or Chicago Typewriter), and the Colt Monitor -- a BAR specifically designed for law enforcement, are described in all their glory. The Monitor became the FBI's first fighting rifle. Unfortunately some gangsters also discovered how useful these various weapons could be.. If you were unhappy with Hunter's book "I, Ripper", don't let that stop you from reading his newest novel done in his highly acclaimed style. Forget the gangster movie interpretations brought to your local theaters by Jimmy Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, and Humphrey Bogart. Instead follow the prose of Mr. Hunter and paint your own pictures of these famous Public Enemies. Very entertaining, very informative, very realistic. A job well done!
