A Versatile and Trustworthy Zinc Powder for DIY Skincare and More
I’ve been using Herbs Botanica’s Non-nano Zinc Powder for several creative projects, including homemade deodorant, sunscreen, and even a mineral foundation, and I am impressed with its performance and benefits. One of the best qualities of this zinc powder is its gentle nature. Unlike many alternatives, it does not irritate my sensitive skin, making it safe to use even on broken skin or grazes, where it can aid in healing ❤️🩹. It’s incredible to see how it not only protects the skin barrier but also absorbs both UVA and UVB rays - something that chemical sunscreens on the market fail to do. ☀️ In my DIY deodorant, I combine zinc oxide with a blend of emollient and fast-absorbing oils, along with zinc ricineoleate, to create a highly effective formula that keeps me fresh without causing irritation. It’s a real game-changer for anyone with sensitive skin looking for a natural alternative to antiperspirant. I’ve also experimented with making a homemade mineral foundation using this zinc powder, mixed with colour matched Bare Minerals shades, a moisturising base cream, kaolin, and cocoa powder. The result was a product that is less toxic than commercial liquid foundations and less drying compared to traditional powdered mineral makeup - making it a fantastic, skin-friendly option. 💋 ⚠️ However, there are a few safety considerations: research indicates that while non-nano zinc is less likely to be absorbed across the skin’s surface than nano zinc, a small amount of uptake can occur. One study also found that after a few hours of exposure to the sun, zinc oxide becomes toxic to a particular species of marine life, at the embryological stage of development. I therefore use zinc oxide at low concentrations in my DIY cosmetics and would advise pregnant women not to use it on sun-exposed skin until more is known about its safety to unborn babies. At £3.96/100g and with a certificate of analysis reassuring me about the purity of this product, I am satisfied that it provides value for money. ⚖️💷 It does not appear to have Organic Certification and therefore I am unsure whether it truly meets Organic standards as stated in the listing.

Used in home made deodorant
Using this instead of soda bicarb in home made deodorant. It works well, but does stain the skin white for a few hours

I’m getting older and my skin recently got much oilier due to the heat and humidity in my area. I’ve had two really bad breakouts in the past three months from a “noncomedogenic” sunscreen. I had to find a solution. I read about Zinc PCA, yes I know this is zinc oxide, and I found only one serum on Amazon. So I ordered this zinc oxide powder and I mix it with a drop of rose hip oil. The zinc dissolves into the oil and turns into a paste which I’ve been applying. My skin is much less oily and I think it’s clearing up the remaining blemishes. This makes a great DIY serum for a fraction of what you’d pay for someone to make it for you.

I used this 2:1 with titanium dioxide to make a sunblock for my horse's pink nose in the summer when he was with a pony that shredded his long nose masks. I slap on some good aloe gel, then apply this with a 1" round foundation brush, and manage to keep him from booping anything while it dries. Much harder to wipe off than the diaper cream or human sunblock creams, though does need reapplication just the same if grazing on wet grass, or each morning. Plus, it's SO much cheaper than the prepared versions of powder sunblock for animals!
