Works very well
Very well made..... takes some trials and practice to use it quickly... Did not need the "limit" tab for rotation control. Not necessary. The extent of the bit from the tool does not seem to be important. The "lock down" of the bit is very good. I use side grinding on a low speed tool grinding wheel, no "danger". The wheel is 8 inches dia. and about 1 1/2 inch thick. The grinder is used for lathe tools. Keeps the tool and drill bits "cooler" at the cutting edge avoiding loss of the "temper". Does not do the "fancy" cuts nor will not work on many of the drill bits that have the "snap-in" connector (not the same diameter as the bit). Highly recommended for keeping a few bits working for a long time.

Not so great, as received, however with a bit of work, can be modified to do an adequate job.
As received, difficult to use. Not sure about the success of the average homeowner. However, with some work an decent (5 star?) fixture can be had. Thumb screws are VERY small and do not operate smoothly. I am not a fan of steel on steel clamping for a fixture. Decided to make two new locking screws, with out of brass, with large 3/4" heads. Now the locking is smooth, easy and secure. I also made new, lateral, adjusting nuts. The originals are marginal, very smooth and slippery, even with the "knurling". The locking surfaced could be better as well. The two new aluminum nuts have better knurling and actually there was room to increase the size of the locking nut to .900". Fine adjustment is now fairly easy to do. As for the function, with a bit of care, drills can be adequately sharpened. I took a broken 25/64" (.3906") and was able to fashion a new (118° standard) point. You'll note in the photo, as from a broken drill, the web is a bit thick. Additional relief grinding might be in order, but wanted to test with only the result of the fixture. The diameter checks as nominal. For a test I used some 6160 aluminum. Machine drilling at 750 rpm. No punch mark, no center drill. The drilling seem centered with equal chips from both cutting edges. The resulting hole was oversize (.005") for the first .200", however, soon settled in and the rest of the depth was .001" over nominal. I did not try steel, but imagine the drill, if stepped up from a small size, would be fine. All things considered, for a $25 fixture, and a couple hours work, not so bad. I am please with the finished result. This are my observations, your mileage may vary. --Mark

The core tool works well, but needs some tweaking
Once tweaked, this sharpening jig works pretty good. By the time I sharpened 5 or 6 old bits I was getting good results. Works especially well on bigger bits that can cost 10 or 12 bucks to replace. Small bits are a little trickier but it can be done. With the small bits, the stop that sits in the flute to position the bit, is a bit tricky to align. You need lots of light and I had to use a magnifier. Also, the stop doesnt like to stay put. Cant tell from the manual, but it looks like the stop is designed to slip in and out of flute. The original thumb screws for setting the jig are difficult to use with their small knurled heads. I immediately replaced them with real thumb screws. The smaller 10-32 used for gross positioning was too small so I drilled and tapped it for a 1/4-20. Basically I will use this for small bits (<1/4) in an emergency but more likely to replace them. For bigger bits it definitely will be used and will save some money.

Drill Sharpener D4144
This drill sharpener really works, I have sharpened many of my old dull bits on a grinder with an aluminum Oxide wheel. I have tried other sharpeners, many costed a lot more, but this one works, and at a reasonable price. I modified the screws the that hold the bit and depth rod with knurled knobs. Good product.

Every mechanic likes sharp drill bits
It was a little tricky to figure out. Once I figured how to mount it next to my grinding wheel it works great.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Works great and leaves drill bits perfectly sharp. I use with a diamond disc and the finish is astounding.

Better than Freehand and My old Black & Decker Sharpener
Video at Shopfox.biz is very instructive. A single base screw won't hold the fixture and its hard to adjust between bit sizes. I built a mount plate with a fence to kept the base properly aligned and to make set up between bits a snap. The adjustment brake wheel frequently loosens. A hard rubber washer helps to hold the wheel setting. The over-hang lip rest is not stable enough to ensure the proper bit orientation especially when changing to the other side of the bit. I am able to use a cheap angle keeper to confirm the orientation because of the ability to swing the whole fixture 90 degrees without losing settings. Once I got the hang of it, I sharpened over two dozen bits for both wood and hard-metal angles in half-an-hour. I had to hand-touch-up only two bits. The D4144 is great for the occasional bit set honing for larger bits, I'd say 3/8th and up. A good value.
