desertcart.com: SSH Mastery: OpenSSH, PuTTY, Tunnels and Keys (IT Mastery): 9781642350029: Lucas, Michael W: Books Review: Excellent Introduction - I cut my teeth on UNIX (Solaris and SCO) and FreeBSD back in the early 1990s. Everything back then went toward Windows and Novell, so I went in that direction, too. About mid-2019 I decided to make a clean and final break with all things Windows and Adobe. Before finalizing my move I wanted to see exactly how much has changed. This book has been a quick read, and it is chock full of relevant and easy to digest material on OpenSSH (2) and PuTTY. I would say that even for a novice with little to no experience (you'd require a basic or just a cursory knowledge of the subject matter to keep up), the text is clear and easy to comprehend. I would venture to say that at the end of this book, you'd have a basic to intermediate knowledge of the subject. Excellent book! I would consider this a must read! Review: Excellent book - Incredible book. Relatively concise without being too dry. Well organized and well written. I can't speak highly enough of it. The cover got me a lot of weird looks. It's one of the very few that I actually read cover to cover rather than just using as a reference.

Good SSH reference book
Great reference book if you are setting up an SSH server. As you guys know, a lot of the config file explanations can be found in the manual pages, but what makes this book stand out is that the author writes from his experience about the expectations and consequences of enable/disabling certain settings on your SSH server. Experience is a valuable thing to have on your side when you are new to a certain topic which is what makes this book is great. For the author: second edition has a small typo on page 144 under markers : )

A very useful book for beginners and forgetful veteran users
Lucas does an excellent job packaging the up-to-date basic technical details of SSH combined with a narrative of explanation and advice. There is the much older book by Barrett, Silverman and Byrnes "SSH, The Secure Shell: The Definitive Guide" (O'Reilly, 2005) which remains a standard and 'definitive' reference. Beginning Unix/Linux/Solaris sysadmins will especially find this newer book especially useful although with some patience and diligence you can find similar information on the web. Lucas sorts out the chaos of that information for you.

Great Book for your collection
If you would like to learn about openssh, you can't go wrong by purchasing this book. The printed version is well constructed, and is nice to read. The book contains a wealth of information and is organized in a coherent manner. The cover art is a bit odd, but who knows, you may like it.

This is a great book. I like everything Lucas writes, and this book is no exception. It's basically a crash course in all the essentials any SysAdmin should know about SSH, but any developer (or generally security-conscious computer user) will benefit from reading it. With his trademark dry humor and approachable style, he walks through everything from the basics of creating SSH keys for both clients and servers, all the way to advanced topics like port forwarding, automation, SSH Certificate Authorities (CAs), and more. It's not an exhaustive reference manual, but offers a huge volume of practical and pragmatic advice, tips/best practices, gotchas, and more, based on Lucas's years of practical IT experience. Final word: If you write code or manage any type of server for a living, I HIGHLY recommend this book.

This is one of the most useful and well-written IT books that I have ever owned. Talented author - great info, some humour, and a nice font size and spacing to make it easy to read. Every IT room should have a copy of this book!
