The first time I did it, I did it by leaning over the tub, kneeling outside the tub, using a hand-held shower head. Way too much trouble! Now, I do it in the shower. I just rinse it out, apply a generous amount of conditioner, wait a few minutes, then rinse again. It's a little awkward to get to the back. It would probably be better if you have a helper, but I have never used one. I just try to make horizontal parts on the back of my head, then apply the color and try to comb it through. My hair has "stubborn" grays so I leave the color on longer than prescribed, usually about 25 min. from when I start to apply the color. I often alternate between levels 4 and 5. I LOVE the color and I love how simple Clairol has made the process. I have medium brown hair and I travel for business often - for many months at a time. Finding someone I trusted in whatever city I happened to be in was too stressful, and several years ago, I decided to try this. The other brands made you open and use the entire container and I really want it for touch-ups, as needed. I need to control how much product I use at one time. I got good at mixing and honestly, it's a breeze. NOTE: When applying it, you may want to lightly comb it through so it blends the color with your dyed color. I do this and it blends. Use a comb you no longer need or love. It will get dyed, too! I leave it on the prescribed time and I also have forgotten and left it on about 10 minutes longer and each time it looks fabulous. I have even used it on my eyebrows, carefully. Even my neighbor/friends who get to see the gray creeping in think I have just gone to my hairdresser, so that says something. Also, I have thin hair, and keeping the color at the roots and the growing out hair added thickness again. I have a convertible and the top is down most of the time and I will say, the color does not fade. I love that it comes with everything you need for a successful root touch-up for a reasonable price. It grows out like any other hair color job.
