KILLER GAME
Oh. My. God. Max Payne is one of the best game I have played in years. It's full of surprises, has this amazingly elegant combat engine, darkly funny film noir attitude and gorgeous Bullet Time mode. Great writing and voice talent kept me watching the segue film, or rather, comic book clips, for the sheer entertainment value -- I was actually almost shocked at how sophisticated and clever some of the writing was. I 'm not used to this in a video game. And what a blessed relief to play a game with an adult story line and a no-apologies somber 'Silent Hill' back story. I really dug the Max Payne character, he's fleshed out, he's vital and worth spending your time with. This could be a movie easy. I have played alot of these Action games, it's my genre of choice, and MP is cream of the crop, top of the tops. I rank this game right up there with Metal Gear 2. And I have to admit, since getting Max Payne, Metal Gear 2, as much as I love it, has been sitting idle. I cannot recommend this game enough. I'd give it ten stars if I could. Max Enjoyment!

A Running & Gunning PS2 game
I heard this game was a classic, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I got it for 1 cent in great condition from Amazon. In 2011, this game is still challenging. The controls took some time to get familiar with. The weapons menu is very easy to get used to as well. There is action right from the start in this game. There are some really harcore shootouts where you think that you just have no chance of surviving. The enemy AI is pretty balanced. Some of them will walk into some of your gunfire, but they work together with the better enemy AI to set you up for failure. You have to be really smart on how you choose to use your weapons. There are PLENTY of weapons in this game to get the job done. I enjoyed the storyline in this game. There are some levels that are so hard & frustrating that you may or will turn the game off. You really feel like you accomplished something when you complete this game. You really feel like you were apart of a really good movie. The reviews scare me for Max Payne 2. I may try it though since I can get it super cheap. I am definitley going to get Max Payne 3 for the Xbox 360 when it comes out!

Great Game.... for PC
Max Payne is a great in every sense of the word. The engaging twisting storyline, and combat, the music, the graphics (for '01). Everything. But the controls suck. Never have I played a game with such bad controls that it made me depressed. Do NOT buy this for PS2. Buy it for PC.

Cool Game
What I loved about this game is the background designs and layouts. Thie is game is fun and interesting, I loved how it tells the story aout max payne's family, it's like the 2008 movie of max payne. What I really love about this game is when I kill a bad guy they just remain thier and they don't disapear like some of the other games. The sound effects are good and a real time action/adventure game, its like playing the james bond games, I havn't play the james bond games, I think the games are tougher for me. At first when my sister was watching what I was playing she asked me 'is that silent hill your playing?'

Amazing story with awesome action!
Max Payne is a rare combination of nonstop bullet flying action tied with an intensely deep and emotional storyline. Max is a detective investigating the murder or his wife and daughter dragged deep down into a new designer drug world. The story runs deep with emotion while the lead continues to spray. I loved playing this game when it first came out and just recently bought it again so I could have a second go at it.

Good plot, terrible play
I feel like I played a different game from the rest of these reviewers. I made it into the early missions of the second part before I couldn't take the abysmal design flaws anymore. It's disappointing considering how good the story and atmosphere of the game are. Plenty has been said about the positive, so I'll lay out the game's many flaws in more detail than I've seen in many of the negative reviews here. 1 - Lack of precision digital controls: If you're a gamer, you probably know that most games utilizing a joystick (pretty much every game made in the past 12 years) allow you to change movement speed based on how far the stick is pressed. For instance, ever since Mario 64, pushing the stick a little bit forward allowed the player to move slowly, sneaking past unsuspecting enemies or gaining more precise movement over treacherous terrain. Pushing the stick all the way forward allows the player to run. Sometimes there's other increments in the middle (sneak -> walk -> run). Max Payne does not have this feature. If the game detects movement of the joystick, you set off in a wild sprint. Usually this isn't an issue (tact and stealth seem to be words alien to Payne) but in a few areas your character must walk along narrow walkways. A slight tilt on the joystick will send Max tumbling to his death. Considering the era in which the game was made (long after the release of Mario 64) the lack of precision controls is almost inexcusable, especially when precision movement is expected. 2 - Abysmal AI: Making life-like enemies has always been a challenge for game companies. There's always some obstacle or unforeseen circumstance that the AI has no script to compensate for. Yet it feels like the AI for Max Payne consists of a few lines that say 'point your gun in the players general direction and shoot'. Enemies will repeatedly try to fire at you from behind walls or run one by one into your line of fire like a duck shoot. Later enemies will throw a grenade then stand there while waiting for it to explode. Of course, the developer compensated for poor quality by putting in a LOT of enemies. The worst issue I found, however (and the one that actually made me turn off the game in disgust) is the AI's ability to detect the player. A certain mission early in the second part has Max unarmed with the exception of a baseball bat. He says that the best course of action is to "Play hide-and-seek" with the enemies. Only problem is, if you use the game's third person view to look around a corner at a group of enemies, they will immediately detect you (even if you're several feet outside of their line of sight) and come running, also apparently calling the rest of the enemies in the area. There is no excuse for this. 3 - dull, repetitious game play: I guess I'm not the best judge of this as a fan of JRPGs, but the lack of depth in enemy AI and the emphasis on run-and-gun game play makes every level feel dull and repetitive. Most opponents can be overcome by following the same one or two strategies, and the huge abundance of ammo means that you'll never find yourself needing to conserve your better weapons. I'll admit that the opening of chapter two was refreshingly different, but consisted of a long segment involving precision controls (see issue 1) and the aforementioned part with the baseball bat (issue 2). I've heard that the second game improves on the mechanics of the first, so I'm willing to give it a shot, but I couldn't play anymore of this one.

The game worked with no issues and delivery was fast. Despite the description, it did not come with a manual. When I contacted the seller, she replied with a condescending and accusatory email. Therefore the rating reflects my experience.
