Classic 1991 'shoegazing' debut on 180 gm vinyl. Review: Waves - one of the greatest songs ever. - What compels me to write a review for this album is the song "Waves." Those opening guitar chords and wash of sound is so evocative of my memories with friends at Stinson Beach in Northern California, even though these memories were a few years before I first heard this song. That is strange that a song can do that to me. I feel the sun, the 'soaring birds', the languor, and the rhythmic ocean through this song. The lyrics are so poetic- the lines 'leaving all my sins I turn away, like soaring birds, I watch my sorrow play,' gets to me every time. And then the drums kick up the beat, and it gets urgent, and the synthesizers soar up an octave, expressing so much of how we feel sometimes in that singular instance. It feels so sincere and from his heart. Those synthesizer harmonies are some of the greatest musical experiences for me. I don't understand why synthesizers aren't used like this more often, like it was in The Cure's incredible Disintegration album. I sure wish Slowdive could have made more albums, although I like Mojave 3 just as much. And then the next song, Brighter, chimes in those beginning notes and Rachel Goswell sustains those ethereal high harmonies that seem slightly out of tune. The other song I have to mention is Catch the Breeze. Turn up the volume at the end and the guitars reverb into oblivion, and you just get lost in them. It seems most people like Souvlaki more than Just for a Day, but I prefer this one slightly more. Thanks Neil, Rachel, and co. Review: Brilliant debut from a classic shoegaze band - The debut album from a classic shoegaze band formerly known as The Pumpkin Fairies.

Good preowned CD
no scratches or skips when i play the cd. bought the cd used, good price for good condition. i would only complain about the packaging for my cd since i’d prefer it been wrapped in bubble wrap or something to protect it better, luckily it wasn’t damaged during shipment

slowdive's first makes an impression
It is my understanding that this was the first of Slowdive's three full length CDs. It is by far the most dreamy of their three albums, being filled with layers of lush, white noise that more often than not drown out the lilting vocals of sometimes-vocalist rachel goswell. Perhaps it should be stylistically labeled as "shoegazer fallout." If the goal of the band on this CD was to be to create a truly ethereal experience for the listener, they succeeded. The guitars are reverbed and delayed and the white noise is simply...heavenly; the harmonics, distortion, and sustain are really beautiful to listen to. The lyrics are not printed, but when listening to the CD it feels that having the lyrics would probably not even be that important since the music conveys so much in and of itself. Despite all of this, however, it would have been nice if the band had chosen some more concrete musical elements to use in their songs. One almost gets the feeling that when the musical inspiration wore thin (or was altogether lacking), they merely chose to drown out the other instrumentation in white noise. White noise is great, but sometimes less is more. Overall, this is a great CD. Those wishing for something more concrete may wish to check out the band's second full-length CD, "Souvlaki."

A timeless masterpiece
If you're reading this thinking about buying a slowdive album, do it. I heard of Slowdive in a rock and roll history textbook. They sounded intriguing, and after listening to the Stone Roses I decided to give them a shot. I was blown away and the experience was life changing. Opened my mind up to a whole new world of music including the likes of MBV. The music is textured, deep, ethereal, meaningful, and emotional. This is Slowdive's best album hands down and unfortunately sits in the shadow of Souvlaki.

Just as the title says, this was one of the records that really defined shoegaze as a genre. The fact that most of it was written in the studio goes to show how much creativity was brimming from the band at the time, and it comes through in the music. It's not a particularly polished piece of work, but it's incredibly inspired, and an absolute joy to listen to. This MOV pressing is excellent. The sound comes out clean and strong, without any unwanted ambiance. Full recommendation here.
