SmallRig Multi-Functional Ballhead Clamp

This review is for the "SmallRig Multi-Functional Ballhead Clamp Double Ball Adapter with Bottom Clamp - 2164". This is a nice sturdy clamp for photography (or other) uses. As can be told from the Amazon photos, the crab claw, tightening screw and handle, and balls in the arm are metal. But to my surprise, the arm itself is metal (looks to be die-cast), and the knob to tighten the arm also appears to be metal as well. The clamp, arm, and mount all seem to be of good quality and should last for quite a long time (only time will tell on this). It clamps down nicely to both wood boards and to round pipes, although I suspect the maximum diameter round pipe it will hold onto is smaller than the maximum size flat board it will hold onto. But for clamping onto tripod legs/arms or onto bike frames/handlebars it should work very well, and be quite secure. I have it clamped onto a board at the moment holding a Nikon SB-600 flash unit and it is doing a proper job of holding up the flash unit. All in all I am pleased with the clamp and am happy with the purchase. There are two different sizes shown by the manufacturer on the listing for the maximum opening distance of the clamp. The second attached photo shows the clamp at maximum opening, next to a ruler. Between the rubber pads the clamp opens a maximum of 2 1/8in, which equates to 53.975mm of width.

This smallrig gadget is one of the coolest and most useful new gear I have purchased lately. Used it on two wedding events already and found multiple uses already from hooking up my small monitor to tripod, to hanging my gopro at creative locations I never thought of before I even hooked it up to my tripod and attached a Sony RX100 camera while I was taking photos on my Sony A7s I had a behind the scenes video captured with camera hanging on this gadget. It even acted as a nice hand grip from my hand sliding up the tripod as I carried it around. I purchased 3 more with one clamp as I plan to get a 3/8" adapter to the clip and hang another ballhead to it for a light and have a gopro attached to the other ballhead and both being attached on the same clamp. Highly recommend as there are many uses for this ballhead and the clamp is amazing as well as it can close and open with just a few twists of the handle. My main recommendation is using lock tight to where the ballhead screw attaches into the clamp so that doesnt unscrew from the clamp and is solid. The clamp itself is sturdy as I thought it was made of plastic but surprisingly it was not.

Right out of the box, I liked the study feel off this heavy clamp. The mechanism on the clamp is sturdy and smooth and doesn't feel like it will break when you apply a little tension. I bought this with a single use in mind but have found so many great uses for it I'm going to buy several more. The clamp can be used on.... just about anything really... from shelves to.... tree branches.... it opens really wide and has a solid vise like grip. The only thing I might note is that (on mine at least) the hole for the arm adapter doesn't get "tight". The weight of a gopro 7 is enough to cause it to loosen. (I compensate for this by making sure the arm bears more weight on the right side and so far no problems) I am going to add a drop of thread lock to it and I suspect that will be more than adequate to solve this minor inconvenience. Over all I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase and look forward to trying some of their other products.

The function works well and does exactly what it’s supposed to. I haven’t had any major issues with it, and overall, it performs just fine. It’s reliable, easy to use, and meets expectations. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done without any hassle.

I have owned at least five other mounting solutions by other manufacturers. Many were very cheaply made, but not this one. Camera will not move once it is locked down. Provides excellent clamping, and the camera mount provides infinite adjustment positions. Highly recommended, good value for the price. I will be purchasing a few more.

This is cool add on. The screw fits web cams but can adapted for small microphones.

You don't know it yet but you need a dozen of these in your kit. Thank me later. Nothing negative to say about these, like most Smallrig products. Sturdy, well designed, strong hold, good range (size of the bite)

Used this Clamp specifically to mount my 5" on Camera Monitor to My Tripod while shooting it is well built and has versatile angles, exactly what I needed, price was the item was a catch actually. it is well build just like all smallrig parts are.

I purchased this item to add more versatile camera angles when making mountain biking videos. I predominantly use GoPro cameras for these films, mainly because they are smaller and lighter to carry than my regular film making kit. A full size tripod would be out of the question, I carry mini-tripods which are useful for close to the ground shots but rely on handy fences or tree stumps for higher shots. I have tried the well known range of bendy tripods but after having three snap, I gave them up. This multi-function ballhead is phenomenal, it clamps very firmly, the single handed adjustment makes getting the right camera angle a breeze. I have even rode down trails with it clamped to my mountain bike and had useable footage from a GoPro 7 with stabilisation. Like all Smallrig kit, the sturdiness and weight are indicators of quality equipment, even the packaging is a cut above.
