How to Draw People: Step-by-Step Lessons for Figures and Poses - Kindle edition by Mellem, Jeff. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. Use features like bookmarks, note taking and highlighting while reading How to Draw People: Step-by-Step Lessons for Figures and Poses. Review: Great "how to" drawing guide - I bought Jeff Mellem’s previous book for my father and he really loved it, so I’m excited to give him this book. I’m not an artist myself but I can see that it’s a great starting point for learning to draw people. It starts off really simply so it’s not intimidating to start the lessons. By the end you’ll be drawing people with all the muscles. The part I like the most was pages 56-57 on how to draw eyes. That really showed me that if you don't get the eyes right you can miss the whole message of the piece you're working on. There are lots of books that cover drawing the figure, but a lot of them are more reference guides than a how-to guide. I think this book gets a lot of things right and would be really useful to artists of any level. Review: Good buy - My daughter loves to draw, had really helped her with technique.

Good Book to learn More Advanced Techniques
Good book. I am a beginning artist trying to learn the basics and the information is past my level and ability. It starts straightforward but moves forward quickly. If you are just starting out, I suggest another book to learn the basics.

The book is a great step-by-step guide on how to draw the human form ...
I purchased this book as a newcomer to drawing with a desire to draw people beyond my ‘stick figure’ capabilities. The book is a great step-by-step guide on how to draw the human form for beginners. Each step was clearly explained and achievable for someone relatively new to drawing. It starts off with drawing stick people to learn proportions and each chapter gets progressively more advanced until you’re drawing fully formed bodies with muscles. I liked the way each chapter builds on the previous chapter and that there are plenty of illustrations to show you what to do. It’s not about drawing a portrait for me, so it suits the goal I have in mind quite well.

He covers all the important things to know and consider.
Eric Barrett covers areas such as gesture drawing, torso drawing, head, arm and leg. With each area he covers structure, muscles, and male/female differences, lighting, and shading. There are so many practice situations set up for you to try what he is teaching. He also covers how clothing interacts with the model and what you need to consider. Love this book.

Really awkward poses, but some useful information
I can see how this could be viewed as a beginner's guide as it starts with stick figures and goes from there. There were some things that I found quite helpful in the book, but the poses were really awkward for someone just starting to learn. There were also sections like the rib and spine section that barely cover certain aspects (I.e. there are no real details of how to draw/shape the spine like the other body parts have). In my opinion, this doesn't seem like a good beginner's guide unless you want to draw realistic human figures and already have some basic knowledge. It just wasn't the right fit for my current needs, unfortunately.

Starts with stick figures, then very gradually builds up. For a beginner like me, this is great!
I have found most drawing books frustrating, even Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. For someone who is reasonably comfortable drawing, this may not be the best book, but I'm not a person like that. Also, I am studying mathematics so I need something that can "coexist comfortably" with that. My interest in drawing stems from my small scale sculpture (I seem to have some feel for that), my hopes to be able someday to work with an engineer or scientist on some layperson book/program, (including manga which boomer me is reading to help me understand today's generation), and remembering an experience in which I could not convey an idea of mine because I could not draw and words did not work nor photos. Different approaches work with different people, there is no "perfect" way to teach something. (I actually once received a commendation from the Army Reserve for teaching a set of medical symptoms by acting them out in a very "hammy" way. I got teased for it, but they were teasing me by reciting the very symptoms I was trying to teach. Success!) If you can identify with my reasons for wanting to learning to draw and why I like this book, then this may be the drawing book for you. If not, then you might want to try something else.

Excelente libro.

I almost want to give it 4 stars but it wouldn’t be fair. The book isn’t easy. It’s a solid method and I’ve progressed but not as much as I would have like; in fairness I think the topic is just that hard. Is there a better method out there? Possible. I haven’t found it. Maybe Spicer? The essence of this book is about key phases of understanding how to draw, starting with simple shapes; and going through the various parts of the figure; then putting it all together.
