Does the amp need to be the Sonos Amp or would these work with others like Yamaha?

You can use any Amp, but the Sonos amps recognize the speakers and have some special tuning protocols they use. They sound really great paired with a Sonos Amp

Can you make a 7.1 surround sound system with Sonos in-wall speakers? Is that a supported setup?

That is what I bought them for (back speakers in the ceiling). Took some balancing to get it “just right”
