It's helping me slowly. It might do the same for you.
I bought this unit a couple of weeks ago with the intention of using it for my back which gives me hell on a regular basis. The first time I used it, I noticed a mild difference that lasted a short time. Subsequent treatments seem to bring more relief and last longer. I used it on my shoulder on which I'd fallen twice in the same year (You can imagine how it feels.) The improvement there has been much more significant. Based on some of my research, I thought I might try it on my feet to treat my peripheral neuropathy. I'd had anodyne treatments in the past, but have been looking for a reasonably priced alternative. The first time I used it, there were places where I couldn't feel the pulses even at the highest setting. But my feet have very slowly become more sensitive to the pulses. The key word here is "slowly." This isn't happening overnight. I see small increments in improvement. But I do see improvement in the neuropathy. That's fairly remarkable as neuropathy isn't an easy thing to reverse. I'm not sure I'll ever get all the feeling back in my feet, but if I get enough to feel secure walking I'll be thrilled. Bottom line is that if you have a problem that a TENS unit might be able to treat, it's worth the money to at least try. Do your homework on TENS units and your condition, then read the reviews of the various units. I'd originally intended to try a brand that's been advertised on TV, but the reviews here on Amazon convinced me to spend an extra couple of bucks and get the Santamedical unit. I'm very happy with it. My expenditure in both money and time is significantly lower than it would be if I was having professional treatments of any sort. I don't advocate self-treatment for everything, but where there is the potential to see significant benefits -- viewed objectively -- without any significant risks, then it's worth a shot, in my opinion anyway. Again, do your homework before you decide on any course of action, and read both pros and cons. ETA: I thought I'd provide a couple of updated observations. I tried it for carpal tunnel problems and couldn't stand more than 5 minutes on the lowest setting. However it did help. I could see the results the next day. As for the peripheral neuropathy, I seem to get my best results with treatments every other day. I don't know why this is, but I do see improvements on the second day after a treatment. My best advice to you if you choose to try this, is figure out what works for you and go with it.

Very Impressive Unit
This little unit is very surprising. It operates on 4 AAA batteries which were included, and it's about the size of a cable TV remote control. I was skeptical at how effective a handheld this small would be, especially with such a modest power supply and no way to plug it into an electrical outlet. However, after turning it on, my concerns were laid to rest. This little device is a power house. I can't feel much at levels 1 & 2, and at level 3 it's as intense as what the Chiropractor administers. I've pushed it as high as level 4 and can only stand that for a minute or so. I can't imagine how anyone could push this higher than 4, and it goes to 10! The instruction manual shows that you can place the pads on the soles of your feet, so perhaps the greater resistance from one sole through your legs and hips to the other is where the higher levels will come in handy. The instruction manual says the voltage range is from 0 to 80 volts, so it's got some very effective step-up circuitry. As others have said, there are 3 manual settings of Massage, Beat, and Knead. From the instruction manual: Massage: 100-250 micro-second pulse width, 16 millisecond period, variable speed, 4 seconds on, 1 second off. Beat: 500 micro-second pulse width, 1 beat per second, speed adjustable Knead: 100-250 micro-second pulse width, 16 millisecond period, variable speed, 4.5 seconds on, 0.5 second off. There are also 5 preset routines for: Waist, Shoulder, Joint, Hand-Foot, and Sole. Amongst the presets is the Repeat button that allows you to hold a specific pattern of treatment that the presets are administering. The pads are very sticky and adhere well to the skin, but peel away easily as well. I'm very impressed with this unit, and am very pleased with the purchase. Highly recommended.

Nifty little toy
I bought this not to manage pain, thankfully, but just to have fun:). I must admit - i WAS skeptical that anything running on 4 AAA batteries could pack a wallop. I have been proven WRONG yet again:). Be sure you start out on the lowest setting, ONE, and SLOWLY see if you like it higher. It starts to feel like sticking your finger in an electric socket above 4, at least to me:) I really like the various preset patterns. My ONLY strikes against this unit are: 1) the MOST problematic, it only runs for 15 minutes then turns itself off and you have to reset the intensity dials back to zero to start it back it up. This is a MAJOR nuisance. Even though I'm a GUY, I still like to take my time and I ALWAYS take at least an hour. The finish line is much more enjoyable if you have a lengthy and pleasant race to find it. 2) I'd really prefer if it ran on AC current. Batteries are always annoying - I cannot comment yet on how long they last, though I have run mine about an hour so far on the first set of 4. 3) The pads are not going to stay sticky for long, and they are only easy to stick on larger flat areas of your body. If you are hairy, that sort of gets in the way, but does not get yanked out on pad removal. 4) It would be nice if you could have 8 pads connected at once instead of 4, and a bit more cord between the set pairs for more variety in placement. If anyone knows an accessory glue that can be used on the pads to make them stick better, please send up a flare. Overall, it was well worth $30. I've spent far more on things that were far less fun. One ex wife comes to mind.... UPDATE 2/7/14: 2 points 1) the batteries last a good long time. I've used it a total of 15 hours at least so far and there is no sign of diminished power. 2) if ESTIM is what you are after, a better choice would be the ZEUS 6 channel electrosex powerbox, better because it has SIX outputs as opposed to only 2 here, and because it runs from an included AC adapter (but can run on batteries if you prefer), AND most importantly because the ZEUS timer goes up to 70 minutes, and if you are anything like me you will find 15 minutes WAY TOO SHORT - see reviews of ZEUS or order on AMAZON here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003KQ7N6A/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ZEUS uses the same 2.5mm connection type for the lead wires as this unit does.

Best Tens Unit I could find for the price! Uses 4 AAA batteries and works well.
This is a substantial unit for the money. It runs on 6Volts or 4 1.5volt batteries,It is about the size of a long remote control. 7 7/8 long x 2 1/4 wide and a little over 5/8 thick. The pads don't last that long like most that are supplied , but clean your skin with wet wipes that have alcohol and put the electrodes back on the plastic sheet after use and they will last longer. Mine had to be turned up on my knee to 9 before I felt it. Sort of pinches feeling when on. I use the joint setting on my knee and works well before I walk to bed at night. The pads weren't sticking so I ordered the 3 M ekg pads on Amazon with snaps and the wire 2mm to 3.5 snap adaptors. These stick about 3-4 times or longer and last longer. Then from 9-10 power , I turned the power down to 6 because they conduct the juice better. A good tip that works well is the original pads wouldn't stick and were falling off. I had some antibiotic curad 55ppm silver solution I bought on Amazon. I put a small dab in the center of each pad and WOW! They stuck again and I turned the power setting from 9 to 6 because you could tell it was stronger and the electricity was stronger. and used less power to work. The only con is that it has a 15 min timer and you have to turn it back on. Dont touch the pads if they fall off even on low power or your fingers will be zapped! Shut it off and reposition the electrodes. I have osteoarthritis of the knee, bone on bone. I found that taking the Now Hylauronic Acid with MSM everyday and use this tens unit about 3 times or more a day and 15 mins after sitting before I go to bed helps. I use the Joint program and about 6-9 power with electrodes of both sides of the knee where i feel the crunching pain and It helps me from the movie theater knee stiffness you get when sitting too long. The manual beat mode with the speed turned up also works pretty good too. The knees take more juice than your muscles etc. The only units that are stronger are the 9 volt battery units and this lasts longer at 6 volts from 4 AAA batteries. The main difference between Tens, Ems and Nmes is the power. Another one said it was Ems also, but was only 3 AAA batteries, so this one actually is better and does the same thing. Ones that are $250-$500 are better , but very costly and this SantaMedical Unit does just fine, Some of the 9 volt models had reliability issues and the triple AAA batteries in these are cheaper to buy. Anyway , if you feel it pinching or contracting your muscle, turn the power down! For the price, you can't beat this unit. TENS=Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, EMS= Electro Muscle Stimulation, NMES=Neuro Musular stimulation which is usually expensive medical units that use more juice and are deeper penetrating and have certain programs also.

greatest back relief ever
I wanted to supply some extra thoughts since my first purchase: Update for use of this product. My best recommendation is to sit still when you use this unit. It is too easy to drop it when you are moving around and you will have problems after that. Because it works so well and after dropping it on the hard tile floor I only had one electrode side that worked, I opted to order a second unit. Happy again, because this works so much better than other units I have tried. When compared to the newer Icy Hot stick and go style tens unit, this has a lot more control on how to get the pulses and pattern that you want. I do like the Icy Hot version for run and go, stick it on and you can do anything, but the zapping/pulsing power on that one is not really to my liking. The pin prick zap comes around frequently on the Icy Hot version, but on the Santamedical style, you can opt completely out of that pattern, use it some, or none as I prefer. This is a very easy to use model, comfortable to wear and works very well for lower back pain/sciatica. It makes life bearable. I have been treating a sore, arthitic back with gel ice packs and heating pad. With no relief for the most part, I was sure this little nothing device would do pretty much nothing too. I couldn't have been more surprised. Easy to get ready for use by putting in the 4 AAA batteries included in the package. I then attach the 4 electrode pads onto the muscle area I want to target, turn the unit on, put the mode and pulse in the right position and sit back for 15 minutes. The sticky pads are ultra sticky, but will not be that way forever. The current is plenty strong at a 4-5 on the settings, so there is plenty more you can use. Use of this little device on a sore back for 3 - 15 minute sessions, from not hardly being able to move, to freely twisting with no pinch at all.

A very good TENS
5/23/14 UPDATE: After several weeks of use the batteries that came with it died. I then used my rechargeable batteries after charging them. I was shocked in more ways than one. The unit was much stronger with fully charged batteries. Therefore I raised my review below from 4 to 5 star because it's much stronger than I thought. So make sure you use good batteries to avoid disappointment. Overall this is a well designed TENS that gets the job done. However, it could have more power. Below are the pros and cons. PROS: 1.) It has 3 different therapeutic modes which are clearly labeled massage, beat and knead. Each mode has a different feel and each mode will help you heal. 2.) It comes with 4 AAA batteries. When they run out you can buy and use rechargeable batteries. 3.) The included 8 page manual is concise and informative. You can start treating yourself within 10 minutes. 4.) Four pads are included and you can use all at the same time for more effective results. 5.) You can vary the intensity easily with 2 switches on the side of the unit. 6.) This is much safer than taking anti-inflammatory drugs which can cause health problems. 7.) The controls are very easy to use. CONS: 1.) It does not use electricity. It only runs with batteries. 2.) The unit is a bit too large to carry in your shirt pocket. However, it's still small enough to be portable. It measures about 2 inches by 8 inches. 3.) The included pads are quite small (1.5" x 1.5"). Fortunately I had some 2"x2" pads from a different unit that worked. If you treat a large area such as your back larger pads work better at relieving pain. 4.) Although this is a fairly strong unit and will alleviate pain, I have a stronger unit which was cheaper. Overall this is a good unit at a decent price. Although this unit could be improved I definitely recommend it.

An amazing solution, at least for me.
I wanted to use this device for a while before writing this review. I have had it for almost three weeks now. I use it twice a day on a very sore shoulder; morning and night. My shoulder muscles have been sore for quite a while, getting worse the last couple of months. The joint is in poor shape and I suspect I may have to have a shoulder replacement at some point, but at the age of 73, I'm willing to wait as long as possible. I place one of the patch contacts on the front of my shoulder and one on the back. I have experimented with all of the possible programs. The "Shoulder" program makes the muscles pulse, but it seems to be a little rough on them. The "Massage" and "Knead" cycles work the best, at least for me. Setting the power on "4" is about as high as I can stand comfortably. I run the Massage cycle for 15 minutes, then the Knead cycle for 15 minutes. I have experienced about 80% pain reduction which lasts around the clock. As a test, I did not do my night cycles the other night, and noticed an almost immediate increase in muscle discomfort, which makes me even surer of the devices effectiveness. The results I'm getting are MUCH better than anything else I've tried (salves, exercises, etc.) at a very reasonable price. I am now able to exercise the shoulder more effectively without pain. A very good thing. The original pads lasted about 4 days before the adhesive gave it up. I ordered some Santamedical pads from Amazon with much better results. They are larger than the originals. After about 9 days the adhesive seemed kind of worn out. As per included instruction, I put a few drops of tap water on them. That restored the adhesive quality back to about 80%. I should get at least 2-1/2; maybe 3 weeks from a new set of these pads. For my muscle pain, this device has done an amazing job. It may work even better, or not as well for others, depending on the problem. In any case, it is well worth trying. From my standpoint, those reviews giving it 5 stars are right on.

a little too intense
ive used tens units at home and at a physical therapy office and i was hoping this would be similar. first off, the positive is that it does work well. i just got the product today so i cant comment on how long it has worked. its easy to figure out but brace yourself for the first time you turn it on. it starts out pretty intense, even at the lowest intensity. theres not really a mild setting and theres no continuous setting. it seems that it only works in intervals. there are a few settings, beat, massage, and knead and the only place i can use it is my lower back, where it doesnt seem as intense. there is much more inflammation and meat there so this makes sense. beat is like a quick shock, massage and knead go up and down in intensity. and there is a speed setting as well. theres a few other settings for different body parts but none of them are a continuous current. if i use it on my shoulders, my muscles contract so much, that my head feels a little weird afterward. i bought it for my lower back, shoulders, and jaw for my tmj, but im too chicken to try it on my jaw since it had such a big effect with my shoulders. id say if you like a real strong current, this would be the thing for you, but for others, it might be a bit too intense. my total opinion, all things considered is so-so. i would give 5 stars if it had a continuous setting and a much more milder setting. on the upside, the product came as advertised, with batteries, and 4 pads. you can use all 4 pads or just the two. would like a few more pads but for $30, i cant complain. it was nicely packaged and i ordered with prime on saturday...it was here monday. very fast shipping, even for amazon prime. fyi---do not use this if you have a pacemaker. while this could be considered common sense, not everyone knows this. using any electronic pulse massager or tens unit with a pacemaker is potentially life-threatening.
