Dont know if to buy 35L or 55L?

The 55L rolls down nicely into a bit smaller package. I use if for my cycling commute to work. It comfortably holds my change of clothes and shoes, my lunch, and my laptop, and still have plenty of room left a few more things if I need to bring them. It looks big when standing empty, but is not so when using it.

Where was the phone case its pictured with

Mine was inside the front pocket on the front of the bag

How comfortable are the straps, looking to carry heavy gear?

I find the pack comfortable, the straps do not bite and are padded well. I typically cycle with 5-10 Kg of stuff in it and, but I am sure you can put a whole lot more in the 55l pack.

Can the bag be padlocked to a motorbike while on a cross channel ferry?

due to the clips for the straps there is nothing to put a padlock on, you could always unclick from bike and take it with you on ferry
