Maiden is the inspirational story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. Tracy s dream was opposed on all sides: her male competitors thought an all-women crew would never make it, the chauvinistic yachting press took bets on her failure, and potential sponsors rejected her, fearing they would die at sea and generate bad publicity. But Tracy refused to give up: she re-mortgaged her home and bought a second-hand boat, putting everything on the line to ensure the team made it to the start line. With the support of her remarkable crew she went on to shock the sport and prove that women are the equal of men. Review: Great tv and an emotional story - A thoroughly enjoyable watch; exciting, interesting, informative and full of emotional highs and lows. Every woman should watch to be reminded that it wasn’t that long ago that the media treated news events about women as just fluff and didn’t take them seriously or their achievements. Also a fascinating watch for any fans of sailing or sporting tales. But mostly it’s a story about the determination, courage, strength and skill of a group of young women. Review: Inspiring and nostalgic - great adventure and spirit - Brilliant documentary for anyone interested in adventure. We have recently become interested in sailing and this was ideal for showing how far that sport can take you and the challenges that come from an around the World voyage. Would still be interesting to non-sailors showing the amazing odds this team competed against. Fabulous.

Maiden - a wonderful buy
Absolutely wonderful. I have watched the DVD nine times. Yes, I suppose that's because I am a yachtsman. A wonderful true story of Tracy Edwards and her crew, in the Round the World Race; my only regret is that the documentary is only 90 minutes long out of a possible 3-4 hours that was edited. There should have been two DVD's. A gripping story of determination against all odds, with an amazing ending. Definitely recommended.

An epic tale of endurance
I well remember these young woman embarking in this epic challenge, this is well worth a watch, with one caveat, that is that although this is in Blu Ray the actual footage of the sail itself is footage that was captured at the time before things like GoPro cameras were even thought of, so you may be underwhelmed if you are expecting picture quality be similar, it isn't, but none the less it is well worth a watch for the story itself, and the amazing footage captured on the actual voyage, and on that basis I recommend it highly, now where are my sea sickness pills.

good film
this film is well worth a watch. The filming was made of old film taken nearly 30 yeas ago but somehow it adds to the drama. A real tale of courage and hard work. A tear jerker.

wonderful story and documentary
There is so much to learn in this documentary about perseverance in the face of the culture war against women at the time. And the actual women telling their story looking at the past makes it so unique. This is a story that inspires me.

Magnifique aventure humaine

Great, great movie!
Problematic, rambunctious little girl turns into a determined and skillful sailor who recruits the first all-woman crew to sail the Whitbred around-the-world race, finds and renews a large sailboat and (satisfyingly) surprises and humbles male sailors and commentators who didn't think women could do this. Inspiring, delightful, a great watch. I've watched it four or five times and given it to all my goddaughters -- and I'm a guy.
