“Greenberg has accomplished a magnificent literary feat. He has taken a great German work, until now all but inaccessible to English readers, and made it into a sparkling English poem, full of verve and wit. Greenberg's translation lives ; it is done in a modern idiom but with respect for the original text; I found it a joy to read.”—Irving Howe (on the earlier edition) A classic of world literature, Goethe’s Faust is a philosophical and poetic drama full of satire, irony, humor, and tragedy. Martin Greenberg re-creates not only the text’s varied meter and rhyme but also its diverse tones and styles—dramatic and lyrical, reflective and farcical, pathetic and coarse, colloquial and soaring. His rendition of Faust is the first faithful, readable, and elegantly written translation of Goethe’s masterpiece available in English. At last, the Greenberg Faust is available in a single volume, together with a thoroughly updated translation, preface, and notes. Review: Good Read - Good Read. Review: A Classic! - a story that contains so many multitudes. translated for us non german speaking folk. Loved it!

You enjoy it if you unmask it
Early 19th century baroque style. Sublime poetry but poor structure and storytelling. Profound themes scattered throughout, sometimes in unexpected places. I forced myself to read that at times. The translation is great! Really helps.

Pretty good!
While no English translation can hope to compare to, The crackling consonants German poetry’s heir to, Their alliterative literature rhymes blüden with blüden, While in English with half rhymes we oft have to make do with …and so on. I sampled a lot of translations (6?) and this one was my favorite in terms of clarity and feeling of the poetry

High Quality Paperback
Reviewing "Faust" is way above my pay grade, so I'll comment on the book itself. Specifically, the "Fully Revised Paperback – July 29, 2014". This is not a typical paperback, or even a typical "Trade edition". The matte cover has a smooth texture, and the "perfect-bound" volume is easy to page through. The acid-free paper has a slight cream color and is relatively thick, with little print-through. The font is very clearly printed and easy to read. The attached photos are a bit skewed and unevenly focused, but I hope they convey the quality of this edition.

excellent translation
I’ve read a few translations of Faust and this by far the easiest to understand, without sacrificing any of the poetry or depth of meaning. For the non-German speaker, I highly recommend it.

literature aesthetic
A monumental piece of art well translated to English, I would recommend having a hardcover copy to prettify your bookshelf.

Well put together paperback.
I’m quite impressed with this soft cover book. The artwork is nice. The spine is as strong as you can get with a thick paperback. The paper is grainy but the font is easy to read read. You need some care when reading not to damage the spine.

Muy buena presentación, letra adecuada y tamaño del libro grueso pero con un peso ligero. En general cumple con la calidad-precio.
