One pound is 4ea rods 1/4" round and approximately 18" long.

Is a flux required for these rods? If so, what type(s) should be used?

Accepted Answer

Yes a flux is required. Peterson #2 is what I have found to be the best but unfortunately it has bin discontinued by the manufacturer. If you can find it get it. Otherwise ask your local welding supply what they would be able to get for you.

ALLOY DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION:Washington Alloy RCI Mod. has properly balanced and controlled levels of high silicon, lowmanganese and trace amounts of phosphorus and sulfur. This composition insures greater flowwith good fusion and tensile strength of the weld deposit. Machinable weld deposits with colormatch, composition and granular structure to gray cast iron. This alloy is a high-quality grayiron oxyacetylene welding rod, designed for gas welding of cast iron, general fabrication orbuilding up new or worn surfaces on castings. It is excellent for cast iron fabrication, repair offoundry defects, filling in or building up new or worn castings. Properly made welds will be asstrong as the original casting.
