Great compressor for home/car tire use
I've read the other reviews, with many being very critical of this compressor because it's only compatible with the 12V battery. Here's my perspective: This is not a compressor designed or intended for heavy-duty use. It is meant as a high-end portable compressor for use around the house. I was searching for one to replace a cheap-feeling but VERY reliable compressor I'd had for decades... and would still be using if a certain member of the family hadn't closed a truck door on the part that inserts into the vehicle's 12V socket! Anyway, I came across this unit (sold without battery). Expensive, compared to the type of compressor I'd been using.... but we love the Makita drill we bought last year (Makita FD09Z 12V max CXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 3/8" Driver-Drill) so I was drawn to the brand... and when I realized that this tool used the same size lithium-ion batteries as our drill.... and our drill had come with two of them... well, serendipity! I've used this Makita a few times now to familiarize myself with it. I love the feel of quality (which should be expected at this price point) and the cord-free operation. It's also very compact. I will use it to keep my car tires properly inflated. The only negative I can come up with is that if I set it at a certain PSI.... say, 32, it will actually inflate the tire to 31.5. Now, this is a very small difference - and can be compensated for (since it seems consistent) by simply setting the PSI a half pound higher than desired - it's no big deal. Just thought I'd mention it. I played around with it by deflating some tires so that they were about 5 pounds low - a kind of worse-case scenario if I've been bad about keeping up with them. I wanted to not only see how accurate the tool was, but find out how long I'd be holding that trigger until they were topped off. Took about 45 seconds... very acceptable (and far faster than the old compressor I'd been using). So, in summary: I believe the criticism of Makita for not making this compatible with the 18V batteries is unjustified. It's made for the many people like me - not intended for heavy-duty shop use - and, for its purpose, it's excellent.

Extremely handy tool for motorcycle and auto tire pressure topups
After researching a dozen different tire inflators, the Makita made the most sense for my needs. All too often I would go out on underinflated tires because it was a root canal to screw the fine threaded valve adapter onto the valve stem while wrestling the coiled hard plastic tube from the vehicle battery driven pump I owned. The HF inflator I used for this purpose quit after two years of intermittent operation and frequent blown fuses. Will never go back to that. The Makita may be a little too large for some to take on a motorcycle camping trip but it's almost worth it because it works so well. Set the pressure in bar or PSI, pull the trigger and hold until the preset pressure is reached after which the unit shuts off. Also lets you know the pressure when you connect using the over-center lever chuck which snaps onto the valve stem and stays there without damaging the stem thread. 12V battery is no problem. I bought the two cell pack and have yet to get past the 50% charge mark on a month's use for tire topup. I don't leave home without making sure my pressures are on the money. No surprise I'm enjoying increased safety and handling performance. Worth every penny.

Great Makita quality but no trigger lock
Works exactly as intended with excellent Makita parts and smooth operation as you would expect from Makita. (Love all their products as I own over 20 tools.) Now for the one star hit: Sure 12 volts fills slower than 18 volts but I knew that when purchasing, but since it fills slower, it should have a trigger lock. It took 2 minutes to fill a mountain bike tire so a real drag having hold the button the whole time. And since it has auto shut off anyway it's perplexing why Makita didn't include a trigger lock feature.

Great portable air pump.
Great air pump, fills the tires on my family's vehicles quickly. You can set the desired pressure on the display, and the pump will cut off when the pressure is reached. Comes with two adapters stored in the base of the handle - one for inflatable mattresses and similar items, and the second for basketballs, volleyballs, etc. Uses one Makita 12 volt battery, which is great as I already have a Makita 12V drill and a 12V driver. There's also an 18V version of this pump, so make sure you buy the right one if you already have batteries. Highly recommend.

Shop elsewhere!
Nothing in english, box and manual. Tool measures in bar and kPa, NO psi. Tool is also10.8v not 12v. Makita is trying to unload it's older inventory, don't buy! I returned the first tool thinking it was the warehouse that sent the incorrect tool by mistake. WRONG! the second tool that arrived was the same.

Awesome Tire Inflator
This is a great little air compressor...super light, the usual excellent Makita build quality, and it works great for topping off tires. It's not meant to fill a car sized-tire from empty (although it would...given enough time), but I rarely need that. It's perfect for keeping all of my various carts, tractors and mowers aired up. I already have many 18 volt Makita batteries and I was kvetching about having to buy into the 12 volt system. But, I'm glad I did. The 12 volt batteries and tools are very capable and much lighter and smaller. They're perfectly suited to many jobs where the 18 volt tool is overkill.

Great portable compressor
Awesome alternative to full air compressor. Have used for car, truck, trailer, mower, bike, etc. all with varied PSI without issue.

There are much cheaper inflators on the market - but with mixed reviews. This is typical Makita - well-made, robust and very powerful, it's well worth the higher price. I can do two cars in a fraction of the time taken with a manual inflator, and there is still battery capacity to do them again a couple of weeks later without having to re-charge the battery. The auto-cut-off operates at exactlly the pressure that I set (double-checked with an approved tyre pressure checker). Unlike cheaper ones, it does not heat up - even after having to put in 15 psi to a tyre that was only half inflated after coming back from holiday. On this occasion it took about 15 seconds to fully inflate. Brilliant piece of kit!!
